Introduction
This remarkable continent encompasses the spectacular, the enchanting, the weird and the wonderful. It’s a land of huge contrasts where one day you might be exploring untouched desert, the next watching the sunrise over mystical Uluru, or shopping in one of the sophisticated cities. Even the place names inspire. Who could resist a visit to the Bungle Bungles, Kangaroo Island or the Devil’s Marbles?
The country’s Australasian and Pacific Rim cuisine is also legendary, with top vineyards supplying the fine accompanying wines. And everywhere there are luxurious resorts and hotels to pamper and cosset after the day’s explorations and exertions.
A highlight of any visit to the Northern Territory is Uluru, in the heart of Australia’s ‘Red Centre’. To watch sunrise over this ancient monolith is a wondrous sight and can also be combined with a visit to the Olgas and an aboriginal art exhibition, an excellent way to gain an understanding of the country’s rich heritage. In the far north of the state, Darwin is the gateway to the ‘Top End’ with it’s wetlands and National Park, home to much indigenous flora and fauna.
Perth is Australia’s sunniest state capital and also the closest point to the UK. Venture beyond the city to discover beautiful golden beaches, the port of Fremantle and perhaps even Rottnest Island. In the south west of the state, the Margaret River wine region is an excellent self drive destination or perhaps experience an epic rail journey aboard the Indian Pacific.
