Introduction
St Barths and St Martin - two Caribbean islands with seductive European personalities. Islands where the streets are lined with fashionable boutiques and bustling cafés, the beach bars serve designer drinks and the conversation is a lilting patois.
St Barths must surely rank as the chicest spot in the entire West Indies. Bursting with Gallic charm and beautiful people, it’s the island of choice for the international jet set who come for the fine dining, the hidden bays and the white sand beaches like Anse des Flamands and Anse du Gouverneur. At just over eight square miles, St Barths is easily explored by jeep, the steep hills and hairpin bends adding a certain sense of adventure. Walk the pretty streets of Corossol, a fishing village where residents speak an old Norman dialect, or spend some quality shopping time in the stylish capital Gustavia. St Jean Bay boasts a superb beach and lies close to the enchanting little town of Lorient, site of the first French settlement.
St Martin enjoys more of a dual personality – part Dutch and part French – its exuberant night spots, duty-free shops, casinos and restaurants promising an upbeat, cosmopolitan experience. Yet there are thirty five beautiful beaches, such as Grand Case and semi-deserted Baie Longue, and the attractive capital of Marigot with its bistros, elegant boutiques and distinctive French feel.
From Antigua, shared or private charter flights are available to St. Barths whilst local airlines operate a regular service to St Martin. Alternatively fly direct to St Martin via Paris, and perhaps combine a stay here with a week or so on neighbouring Anguilla.
