Tobago

Introduction

Is this really the last of the ‘unspoilt Caribbean’? Judge for yourself as you discover this back-to-nature place that was once part of South America and which still ranks today as an eco-tourist’s dream. Yes, it has the golden beaches and turquoise blue seas synonymous with the Caribbean and that serene, pastoral pace of life necessary for recharging the batteries but for those prepared to look just that little bit closer, Tobago holds many more delights and surprises.

Its tropical rainforests are home to over two thousand flowering plants, six hundred species of butterflies and four hundred types of birds, whilst its waters hide leatherback turtles, manta rays and the world’s largest brain coral. The Caribbean Sea gently washes the beaches of the northward coast and the rolling Atlantic breaks against the southward side.

Buccoo Reef, a protected marine park near picturesque Pigeon Point, is a fabulous spot to snorkel and scuba dive, whilst land-based sporting activities may include a round or two of golf at Mount Irvine or Tobago Plantations. Accommodation choices range from full service resorts to a variety of stylish villas, set in idyllic golf or beach locations - an ideal choice when travelling with family or friends or when more freedom and flexibility is preferred.

A holiday here in July may well coincide with the Heritage Festival which culminates in a colourful street parade. Regular flights, either direct or with a short stopover in Antigua, link this unspoiled island retreat conveniently to London, though the two are worlds apart. In short, it’s the kind of place you come to and wonder why on earth you haven’t been before.

The 2008 Plymouth Jazz Festival kicks off on April 25th and will run for three days in the picturesque fishing village of Plymouth and this year will features big names like Diana Ross, Shakira, Rod Stewart and Whitney Houston.
