Introduction

Warmth and occasional curiosity greet the traveller in Vietnam. Culturally and scenically diverse, its attractions range from peaceful paddy fields to energetic cities. Hanoi is an excellent base for day trips to the mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh and World Heritage Site Halong Bay, while Ho Chi Minh city itself – formerly Saigon –is the starting point for trips to the colourful floating markets of the Mekong Delta. Be sure, too, to make time for a visit to the Cu Chi tunnels abandoned by the Viet Cong.

For a taste of traditional Vietnam visit Hoi An, another World Heritage Site renowned for its quaint cobbled streets, tailorshops, artisan galleries and outstanding cuisine. Or Nha Trang where the clear turquoise waters are perfect for snorkelling and scuba diving. For a cooler climate and spectacular mountain scenery, the old French Hill Station of Dalat is well worth a visit.
