Fiji

Introduction

Of all the world’s tropical idylls, nowhere conjures up images quite so romantic as the South Pacific. Whilst the white sand beaches and cerulean seas are what holiday dreams are made of, it’s the genuine hospitality of the islanders that creates such a lasting impression. This is a world that moves at an indolent pace, caressed by ocean breezes and blessed by stunning scenery.

Fiji, which in the nineteenth century became the trade centre for the South Pacific, comprises 333 islands, the larger ones being volcanic and mountainous. Often, dense tropical forests cover the windward sides of the islands whilst to the leeward lie grassy plains and tall casuarinas. Snorkel over teeming coral reefs and join in the ‘mekes’ or communal dances where you will drink kava and witness fire walking. Fijians still practise many traditional arts and crafts. Woodcarving is important and inlaid tanoa drinking bowls are in daily use in Fijian households. A ravishing destination reached by daily flights from London Heathrow via Los Angeles with Air New Zealand.
