Antigua

  • Sunset at Shirley Heights with a view of boats on the sea

Between hushed coves and Crayola buildings, the underlying strum of Antigua’s maritime heritage hums softly below the beat of its Caribbean core; this is the place to throw cares out of the window and be unapologetically peaceful.

While it may seem cliché, sometimes there needs to be a place to press the pause button. So, taking into account its mellow vibe and effortlessly exquisite surroundings, Antigua is top of our list to just sit back and take it slow.

It's an often repeated fact that there is a blanket soft beach for every day of the year, and each one has its own unique aura; from the fun-loving sands of Fort James to the more secluded romance of Ffryes beach. It isn’t hard for us to paint a picture of the biscuity sands and ocean the colour of peacock feathers – but understanding Antigua’s personality means looking beyond the sun lounger.

Should the call to leave the luxurious resorts arise, we recommend heeding it because the freedom to explore is your own. Water babies race beneath the waves on snorkelling scooter safaris or journey to the red-throated frigatebirds of neighbouring Barbuda. Meanwhile, the land lovers strap up walking shoes and hike Monk’s Hill to the colonial ruins of Fort George – now succumbed to nature – or absorb the colourful carnival spirit at English Harbour’s Friday fish fry. The discerning foodies are found making the most of the sand between their toes at the many beach-side clubs and eateries – from the casual and authentic shacks to the hip and spirited upscale restaurants.

Taking into account its mellow vibe and effortlessly exquisite surroundings, Antigua is top of our list to just sit back and take it slow.
