South Africa / Dwyka Lodge at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Situated on a horseshoe bend of a dry Karoo ravine, Dwyka Tented Lodge stands in wilderness that was once roamed by the foraging San people of Africa, leaving behind their evocative rock art glyphs and paintings. Awe-inspiring rock formations rise all around, hiding the camp’s nine luxury tents from view – each featuring comfort cooling and heating, an en-suite bathroom, a minibar and a private deck with hot tub. There’s a convivial communal lounge with fireplace, satellite television and Wi-Fi, and a relaxation retreat with two therapy rooms. Wine buffs will be impressed by the extensive wine cellar. The private Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in which the lodge lies offers Big 5 game viewing in a malaria-free environment, with the added advantage of being able to join intimate boat safaris on board the twelve-passenger Peregrine across the Bellair Dam, bringing the possibility of approaching close to pods of hippo and to view the incredibly prolific birdlife in the dam’s environs.

When is the best time to visit South Africa?

A year round destination, but expect cooler weather in the Eastern and Western Capes during winter, between June and August. Mpumalanga stays warm year round with temperatures, humidity and rainfall all increasing in the summer months between October and March. The whales return to the waters around Hermanus from July to November, and the spring months of August and September are particularly colourful along the Garden Route. The prime time for game viewing is generally the drier winter and spring months from April to September when animals frequent the waterholes. During the wetter summer months between October and March, animals can still be viewed but are more widely dispersed – from December to February there may be more sightings of newborn animals.
