South Africa / Tilney Manor at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

With its proximity to the Little Karoo Wine Route, Tilney Manor is a favourite haunt of oenophiles and couples wanting to experience the romance of the Karoo wilderness. Six open plan suites offer every luxury and comfort, from the big roll-top bathtubs to the his and hers outdoor showers and the expansive private verandas giving breathtaking vistas of the mountains and plains of wild flowers that stretch away into the distance. The lodge also boasts a rim-flow swimming pool, indoor and outdoor facilities and a relaxation retreat for revitalising therapies. Relax by the fireplace in the lounge, secure in the knowledge that there’s a perimeter electric fence between you and the Sanbona reserve’s animal population. See at first hand Sanbona’s commitment to conserving endangered plant species, protecting the region’s indigenous rock art heritage and involvement in the reintroduction of locally extinct hippo, elephant, cheetah, buffalo, lion and more. Stargazing in the Karoo is legendary thanks to the freedom from light pollution.

When is the best time to visit South Africa?

A year round destination, but expect cooler weather in the Eastern and Western Capes during winter, between June and August. Mpumalanga stays warm year round with temperatures, humidity and rainfall all increasing in the summer months between October and March. The whales return to the waters around Hermanus from July to November, and the spring months of August and September are particularly colourful along the Garden Route. The prime time for game viewing is generally the drier winter and spring months from April to September when animals frequent the waterholes. During the wetter summer months between October and March, animals can still be viewed but are more widely dispersed – from December to February there may be more sightings of newborn animals.
