South Africa / Varty Camp at Londolozi Private Game Reserve

African wildlife filmmaker and conservationist, John Varty, and the wider Varty family have kept the camp fire burning here for generations. Often referred to as the heart and soul of Londolozi, the camp is styled on the owners’ home, with a family heritage feel to guest chalets which feature crisp linens on king size beds, elegant bathrooms with bath tub, and a minibar. Outside on the raised timber deck, beneath a panoply of giant trees, is a private swimming pool by a thatched sala, with comfy seating from which to imbibe the astounding views of the riverine landscape. Wildlife viewing around the camp is simply unsurpassed, Sabi Sands sharing unfenced borders with Kruger National Park to open up virtually limitless game viewing opportunities. The leopard sightings are said to be unforgettable, with many guests also commenting on the exceptional skills of the rangers and trackers. There are morning and afternoon game drives, or experience the close-to-nature adventure of a guided nature walk.

When is the best time to visit South Africa?

A year round destination, but expect cooler weather in the Eastern and Western Capes during winter, between June and August. Mpumalanga stays warm year round with temperatures, humidity and rainfall all increasing in the summer months between October and March. The whales return to the waters around Hermanus from July to November, and the spring months of August and September are particularly colourful along the Garden Route. The prime time for game viewing is generally the drier winter and spring months from April to September when animals frequent the waterholes. During the wetter summer months between October and March, animals can still be viewed but are more widely dispersed – from December to February there may be more sightings of newborn animals.
