Portofino / Belmond Hotel Splendido

From its hillside position high above the yacht-dotted harbour of Portofino, this former monastery exudes an air of elegance and refinement. A Belmond hotel, it retains its patrician air and Belle Epoque grandeur, the lavishly decorated guest rooms and suites having either a balcony or terrace to capture the incomparable bay vistas. Cuisine is exceptional – at La Terrazza succulent seafood and pasta specialities are served on the fragrant terrace overlooking the ocean; an experience of Focaccia, Pesto and Olive Oil tasting can be organised by the chef. At sister hotel Belmond Splendido Mare, Chuflay restaurant conjures up the glamour of decades past, dine indoors or alfresco on the terrace bordering the bustling Piazetta, where in the evening a pianist plays while you dine. Recreations centre around the tennis court and the open air heated seawater swimming pool. A new wellness centre with three treatment rooms offers sensuous therapies, pedicures and massages, together with family yoga and an array of kids’ activities at the Smile Club. There is a complimentary shuttle service from the hotel to Portofino village.

When is the best time to visit Italy?

Italy is a year round destination especially for city breaks, with a largely temperate climate with regional variations. Summers are hot especially from Rome southwards, whilst spring and autumn are mild. Winter in the south is warmer and drier than in the northern and central areas which can be much colder with snow fall in the mountainous regions.
