Playa del Carmen, Mexico / Casa de la Playa

Hitting all the sweet spots with its riviera setting and freeing access to a showcase of scintillating parks; this Mayan-inspired boutique entices chocoholics, tipple-seekers, and nature-lovers alike.

Filled with unsuspected treats from a tequila tasting arrival to its try-every-flavour chocolateria, this serene enclave is the trusty enabler for grown-up indulgence. Bringing temptations to every turn with its calming beachside position and sophisticated design, the hardest decision ever made is which postcard scene you’d rather settle into. Time is spent getting closer to the ones you came here with, drinking in the rays while taking a dip in the mesmerising waterway peering out to sea or in the overhead sky-pools that (literally) bridge the architectural gaps. While fiesta-like fun is never too far away with open access to a plethora of Xcaret’s parks, set across landscapes that span the Mayan jungle to a maze of caves and underwater rivers.

A sense of place

Meaning ‘The Beach House’ in Spanish, Casa de la Playa is a showcase of Mexico itself. Going way beyond its bamboo furniture, stone wall features, and woven reed designs, local botany connects with natural surroundings to make everything feel like it simply sprang up out of the ground one day. While a humbling philosophy for happiness found across the aptly named Natural, Fiesta and Wellness buildings invites a holistic approach to rejuvenation found at their very heart.

In pursuit of…

…a generous and intimate bubble both near and far. Silently tucked away, this abode is the perfect fix for those who prefer a little privacy. Staff raise the stakes to rival Santa’s elves with their secretive yet hands-on approach that makes it easy to almost forget it’s all included; gifts are delivered each night by sundown, while the wine cellar is kept fully-stocked to freely smuggle your favourite bottle away. But it’s the butler host available to every guest that truly stops the bubble from popping, with all meals and excursions swiftly arranged so that days out are just as carefree as within the hotel’s walls.

Wake up here

A game changer when it comes to its all-inclusive offerings, it may come as no surprise that spacious suites are the gold-standard here. Each with its own character and private pool looking out to sea, the laid-back beach lifestyle is never too far away. With the chosen few also housing an interconnected spa cabin for that added intimacy in the midst of it all.

On location

If it wasn’t obvious by the mouthwatering chocolateria, wine cellar, bodega or breadth of eateries, then it’s worth mentioning that food is scrumptiously essential here. Stories served by the mouthful, each restaurant plays host to its own esteemed chef. Like Martha Ortiz and her all-female kitchen’s unique take on Mexican ingredients inspiring their innovative gourmet plates, and the Rivera-Rio brothers geographically themed cuisine nights that invite foodies to delve into their favourite dishes from across the country.

A Carrier curation

Live music serenading over a private dinner, getting exclusive access to secret coves, attending a Mayan purification ceremony. The only challenge to crafting experiences here is found within the realms of the imagination; with each surprise being carefully curated to shake the days up like a pair of maracas themselves.

When to visit Mexico

Riviera Maya is enjoyable year-round, but October to May is generally the most pleasant time to visit. Humidity is at its highest from July to September, with occasional showers more likely to occur on the Gulf Coast. November to May are the most popular months to visit Baja Peninsula, characterised by warm, generally dry days, whilst July to October tends to be hotter and more humid with the possibility of tropical storms. Mexico City is best visited between March to May; winter brings cool temperatures, whilst June to October can be more humid with a daily short burst of showers.
