In addition to air conditioning, decadent dressing areas and four poster beds, each lodge features a private deck complete with easy chairs – the perfect vantage point to overlook the Savute Channel, one of Northern Botswana’s greatest mysteries which can change without warning; the Savute Channel began to flow after nearly 30 years of lying dormant, but has since dried up again.
Concentrations of elephant are high, whilst predator sightings of lion, wild dog, leopard and cheetah are likely; from December to March, the Savute becomes a bird lover’s paradise with over 250 species visible. Guests can choose between dining indoors or beneath the African skies at the traditional boma, an experience guaranteed to bring residents even closer to nature. For those wishing to venture further afield, afternoon tours into the bush to uncover the spectacular Bushmen paintings can be arranged, as can sundowners under the majestic Baobab Trees.
The best time to visit Botswana for game viewing in the delta areas is during the dry winter season from April to October when animals are drawn to water sources. Days are warm and sunny although nights can drop below freezing – in October temperatures can be particularly hot. The Okavango area tends to be more moderate than the Kalahari where seasonal differences are more extreme and activities vary according to wet (November – March) and dry (April – October) seasons.
