Inside all is tranquil beneath beamed ceilings, the six stone and adobe suites having being carved into the cliff top. Each has a small indoor sitting room leading to the bedroom, indoor and outdoor shower and a rim flow plunge pool with extensive vistas – small wonder that the property is popular with honeymooners and those seeking a romantic African escape. Photographers, too, head here in considerable numbers in search of the ever-elusive cheetah, white and black rhino and nyala antelope with their distinctive striped shaggy coats and spiral horns. As for birdwatchers, this is paradise, with over 415 species having been identified to date. A visit to the endangered wild cats program is a must, while seasonal river cruises bring the chance to get up close to hippo. A lodge that’s hard to beat for its combination of cosmopolitan flair and authentic African feel.
A year round destination, but expect cooler weather in the Eastern and Western Capes during winter, between June and August. Mpumalanga stays warm year round with temperatures, humidity and rainfall all increasing in the summer months between October and March. The whales return to the waters around Hermanus from July to November, and the spring months of August and September are particularly colourful along the Garden Route.
The prime time for game viewing is generally the drier winter and spring months from April to September when animals frequent the waterholes. During the wetter summer months between October and March, animals can still be viewed but are more widely dispersed – from December to February there may be more sightings of newborn animals.
