South Africa / Long Lee Manor at Shamwari Private Game Reserve

There’s an air of quiet refinement about Long Lee Manor, an Edwardian style property dating back to 1910 that sits amid carefully manicured gardens and lawns in a wildlife rich and malaria free private game reserve.

Ideal for a luxury escape or romantic getaway it offers richly furnished accommodation imbued with every conceivable creature comfort, with relaxation and recreation provided by a cosseting spa, two swimming pools and the choice of lavish dining either indoors or out. Game drives, which are timed to coincide with the animals’ most active periods during the early morning or evening, take place in comfortable vehicles complete with a trained game ranger to give fascinating insights into the wildlife and their habitats. In addition to spotting the Big 5 birding safaris are equally popular, bringing opportunities to see a variety of raptors, such as Booted Eagles and Black Shouldered Kites, as well as species like African Darters and Malachite Kingfishers. Why not take the opportunity to join a Pro Photo Safari to ensure you capture your wildlife experiences to perfection.

When to visit South Africa

A year round destination, but expect cooler weather in the Eastern and Western Capes during winter, between June and August. Mpumalanga stays warm year round with temperatures, humidity and rainfall all increasing in the summer months between October and March. The whales return to the waters around Hermanus from July to November, and the spring months of August and September are particularly colourful along the Garden Route.

The prime time for game viewing is generally the drier winter and spring months from April to September when animals frequent the waterholes. During the wetter summer months between October and March, animals can still be viewed but are more widely dispersed – from December to February there may be more sightings of newborn animals.
