Barcelona, Spain / Hotel Neri

They don’t come more immersive than Hotel Neri, the walk across the Plaça de Sant Felip Neri feels just like walking home – except “home” is in a medieval palace.

Claiming the title of the Gothic Quarter’s first boutique hotel, this little gem is the city in “real life”. Where the summer months see bona-fide-Barcelona-seeking couples sipping coffee in the square that’s shared with the church of the same name (said to be Gaudi’s preferred place to pray). With its original period features and chilled out musical ambience, Neri retains the magic of its characterful aristocratic roots, while seeming a million miles away from the polished main streets just down the road.

Inside, 22 keys hold unique charms of their own. But it’s 107, a Junior Suite, that has all of the historical charisma with its original beamed ceiling, and room 301 with its brilliant views of the square. Being a Relais & Châteaux (the only one in the city may we add), the fusion of Catalan and French food at “a” restaurant is sublime, as expected; while a secret no-outsiders-allowed terrace looks down on the streets from the outdoor-pool-adorned rooftop. Hotel Neri, however, prefers to let its location do the talking with its in-the-know connections steering away from the tourist traps in favour of a more local scene. Think an almost 200 year old Modernist jewellery workshop, gothic monasteries and opera singer companions just for starters.

Travel notes:

  • 22 rooms and suites with healing quartzite stone bathrooms
  • In the heart of the city only a 5-10 minute stroll from must-see spots like Las Ramblas, La Boqueria market and the Picasso Museum
  • With its sophisticated and cosy vibe, we think it’s a haven for adults or families with teens
  • Original period features are melded perfectly with modern silhouettes, artwork and amenities
  • Bespoke service with personal staff connections for local experiences
  • Extending the family, Hotel Neri has a sister property: The Wittmore – a deeply stylised boutique hotel with a private members concept. Just ask us for more details.

When to visit Spain

Mainland Spain’s climate varies from temperate in the north to dry and hot in the south. Spring and autumn are pleasant and warm whereas July and August are hot, particularly inland. In Mallorca sunshine and warm temperatures are the norm from April to October with the cooling influence of the sea preventing excessive temperatures during the peak summer months, winters are mild and dry with occasional showers. Tenerife and Gran Canaria are year-round destinations, the climate being constantly warm for most of the year with July and August being hot.
