Review / Review of Constance Prince Maurice

Sally Yendley

"If you’re looking for a romantic hideaway, this is the place for you"

Mauritius is an enchanting place known for its white sandy beaches surrounded by clear turquoise waters and its heady mix of French, Indian, African and Creole influences. If you’re looking for pure luxury whilst there, you need look no further than Constance Hotels & Resorts; with two offerings on the island - Constance Belle Mare Plage and Constance Prince Maurice – you’re spoilt for choice. Carrier’s Sally Yendley shares her favourite moments from her recent stay at both...

Setting / the tone

While it does not cater exclusively for honeymooners, you would not regret choosing to take your honeymoon here – it offers first class service, a carefully designed selection of exclusive and romantic dining options, striking suites, and a beach that looks so perfect you’d have thought it only existed in the land of dreams. However, Constance Prince Maurice is also a great choice for couples and families with younger children; I wouldn’t recommend it for older children and teenagers though, as there isn’t quite as much going on here as there is at Belle Mare Plage.

Choosing / Your Room

With a mix of junior suites, family suites, and villas, there is certainly an accommodation type to suit all needs. Junior suites are located in clusters of no more than eight per building, meaning you never feel overwhelmed by other guests. For a really special suite, request one of the few that are built up on stilts over the resort lagoon (pictured); this is quite a novelty in Mauritius as no other hotels offer accommodation of this kind. If you’d rather direct access to the beach, you can request a beachfront junior suite, making your longed-for morning ritual of rolling out of bed and into the ocean a reality. Three of the spacious villas are also built up on stilts overlooking the lagoon, while a further nine are fitted with private heated pools. Guests seeking the utmost privacy should take the Princely Villa - located directly on the beach in a secluded spot within the hotel grounds, it provides three individual terraces each facing a different part of the ocean and the lagoon and two heated pools (pictured). In addition, a kitchenette is included to enable private chef and butler service.

Time to be / Active

Like Belle Mare Plage, Prince Maurice provides guests with access to both the LINKS and LEGENDS golf courses. Water skiing is included on a complimentary basis within the watersports programme, which also includes snorkelling, windsurfing, pedalos, kayaking and a glass bottom boat experience. And, for the adventurous and adrenaline-chasing, a new Kite Surfing programme has just been introduced. If you prefer relaxing by or in the water, than head to either the large swimming pool or the smaller lap pool, which is heated in winter and used as a quiet, adults-only pool in summer.

Time for Wine

One of the main highlights of Prince Maurice is its wine cellar: it is the biggest in Mauritius with some 25,000 labels to choose from and Jerome, the French Sommelier, is amazing at recommending the right wine to pair with your meals. I have never met a person so passionate, or knowledgeable, about wine.

Floating food

Make a reservation for Le Barachois – the ethereal floating restaurant - open for dinner only. With five floating decks overlooking the lagoon available to dine on an amazing selection of fresh seafood dishes, it is the best place in the resort to watch the sunset. If you’re lucky, you may even see Jonny (the lagoon’s native bull shark) make an appearance as you sip on your sundowner.

Sense of space

This hotel is truly one of the best in Mauritius: not only is it of the highest of standards, it also has an exclusive boutique feel to it. The food here is exceptional, and even though Prince Maurice was running at over 80% occupancy during my visit, it never appeared busy and always felt quiet and tranquil. Furthermore, with its location being within a bay which is sheltered from the wind, it is an ideal retreat all year round.
