Luxury Travel: All-time Favourites
Laura Millar, Travel and Food Writer, Woman & Home and City A.M

Find out why New York is Laura’s all-time favourite.

New York, New York – so good, they named it twice. The Big Apple, the city that never sleeps, the concrete jungle where dreams are made of… years before I first ever visited, I fell in love with it, through movies, music and TV. Yellow taxis; steam rising up through manholes on every street corner; pizza by the slice; Tiffany’s for breakfast (or lunch,or dinner); Batman protecting his beloved Gotham City; the Chrysler building (my all-time favourite edifice); great ‘cawfee; the Statue of Liberty – the reality was even better than the images. It pulses with energy, 24 hours a day, and I truly feel more alive here than in any other city in the world; basically, I just heart NY.

Broadway – Behind-The-Scenes

From Chicago to Phantom of the Opera, New York’s Broadway continuously delivers the best of the best, generating a cheerful and infectious energy that lasts far beyond the twinkling lights. For an exclusive taste of this theatrical landmark, opt for a behind-the scenes Broadway experience, featuring pre-dinner cocktails, the best seating, backstage access and a personal meet-and-greet session. Equally as appealing, the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts brings the likes of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and New York City Ballet into one spectacular venue.

Must-See Musuems

As one of the largest cities in the world, it comes as no surprise that New York’s cultural and arts scene is as eclectic and mesmerising as you can get. Follow an art expert to New York’s best museums and fine art institutions on the Museum Mile along Fifth Avenue. The Metropolitan Museum of Art boasts the title of America’s largest museum. For a truly unique experience, explore some of the city’s most sophisticated and creative neighbourhoods by bike with a dedicated guide, before descending into the local Brooklyn hotspots for the evening’s festivities.

Bright Lights – City Nights

Every kind of nightlife experience imaginable exists across this remarkable city, with sultry blues setting the tone in Harlem and sophisticated cocktail bars drawing a diverse crowd in SoHo. For a refined taste of the Big Apple, head to the iconic Meatpacking District; this bustling neighbourhood is home to the celebrity-frequented Catch NYC, where exquisite seafood is served upon an intimate rooftop terrace. An essential to pre-book, the PDT (Please Don’t Tell) cocktail lounge is entered through a vintage phone box and exudes an understated feel.

The High Line

Once a former railway track, The High Line elevated park is now a prime hotspot for New Yorkers, boasting bespoke foodie tours, opera performances, open-air talks and summer play sessions for children. Stock up at the local Gansevoort Market for a pleasant picnic in the park or take advantage of the nearby restaurants serving traditional American and delectable international cuisine. Led by the Amateur Astronomers Association, visitors can also partake in stargazing in the heart of the city.
