Durban, Drakensberg Mountains, KwaZulu Natal Battlefields, Thanda Private Game Reserve / Battlefields and Safari

A self-drive itinerary combining art in the city, hiking the Drakensberg Mountains, storytelling in Zululand and an authentic Big 5 bush experience.

Begin with a stay in Durban on Umhlanga’s prestigious beachfront; here waits fine dining, direct beach access and a superb spa for a relaxing start to the journey. Next, adventures in the Drakensberg Mountains beckon including guided treks, horse riding and fly fishing. Move onwards through the historic Zulu Battlefields – take a thought-provoking tour to Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift led by resident historians. Finish with the sights of the Big 5 from a camp reminiscent of a bygone era; what’s more, Thanda is a private game reserve so the camp staff are the only people you’ll encounter on the roads while you’re here.

Itinerary highlights:

  • Try the Umhlanga Sling – The Oyster Box signature cocktail
  • Get an adrenalin rush at the Montusi Mountain Lodge Adventure Centre in the Drakensberg Mountains
  • Learn about the Anglo-Zulu war on a Battlefield tour

Against the backdrop of the Drakensberg Mountains, soft adventures include hiking or mountain biking along mountain trails, horse riding, fly fishing and swinging over forests on a zip line. If the ten kilometre hike to the top of Cathedral Peak is a little daunting, we can arrange for you to hop into a helicopter or take a spectacular sunrise hot air balloon ride instead. For down time back at the lodge, there are thatched garden suites with uninterrupted panoramas of the Amphitheatre escarpment and a swimming pool to cool down in. (FB)
