Review / Review: Huvafen Fushi, Maldives

Sally Yendley, Sales Consultant

"An uber cool resort"

This is the coolest resort we visited. The unpretentious and casual style of Huvafen Fushi was evident right from the speedboat transfer. Cheeky staff wearing bandanas met us on boats with sensuous soft furnishings. They were very relaxed and outgoing; we were all greeted by our first names and offered a 'firefly' tonic.

We were taken to our individual buggies and driven through the resort out onto the pontoon and all the way to the end where two stunning Ocean Pavilions sat in wonderful privacy. They are huge, have an amazing indoor/outdoor pool and a brilliant bath in the master bathroom.

If you are looking for real privacy, the Beach Bungalows may be a little too close together; the Lagoon Bungalows are great for watching boats going past; Ocean Bungalows have a separate living area, a Jacuzzi and a section of glass floor in the lounge.

Our Villa was serviced by our personal 'on-call 24/7' butler, named Mouse. Whenever we needed to go anywhere, Mouse was there, ready to collect us after dinner, help us pick out a DVD from the library, then take us home.

The underground wine cellar was very impressive with 6000 bottles of wine, and I loved Raw with its healthy, raw and really creative menu, beautifully presented though it wouldn't cater to everyone's tastes. Salt, open for dinner and overwater, is seafood inspired. Nearby Foglianis serves gourmet pizzas; you can also dine at the water's edge 'On the Rock'.

The infinity pool area looked very slick and also really quite sociable; it has lots of loungers and a salt-water flotation pool extends out over the water. The spa, gym and yoga pavilion are all over-water, with most treatment rooms having a glass floor under the bed. The 'Underwater Spa' is very contemporary if rather clinical, but watching the marine life swim by in the relaxation room is pretty cool!

65ft dhonis can be hired by the hour, half day or overnight and I would really recommend taking advantage of this. We spent an afternoon on the dhoni - I loved the deck with its huge comfy cushions - and went snorkelling followed by a picnic lunch on a nearby sandbar. A great experience!

This is an uber-cool resort and as such won't appeal to everyone. That said, it doesn't feel the slightest bit pretentious or trying-too-hard trendy.
