Mozambique

  • A view of a boat from between trees

A country still with some growing to do, these lesser-trodden coastlines that often act as an add-on to a South African safari are a rare find of authenticity-meets-blissfully-beachy break.

Shake the dust from safari boots as the unblemished beaches and deep blue sea of Mozambique's coastline appear from the plane window. The islands here are the quintessential barefoot paradise; all tranquil sands where turtles nest and warm waters hiding iridescent reefs while dolphins play in the waves. In the habituated locales, there’s a unique blend of African, Arabian and Portuguese influences, most evident in the spicy cuisine and Latin beat of the local music.

While in the sub-tropical south, people make way for wildlife in the five islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago breaking the surface of the shimmering Indian Ocean with beautiful mounds of powdery beaches, forested dunes and lush vegetation – home to Samango monkeys and a kaleidoscope of butterflies.

Where Mauritius once reigned as the undisputed monarch when it came to a post-safari beach break, Mozambique is hot on its heels challenging for the throne. Its under-the-radar status means more personal and intimate properties mirroring those seen on safaris; hotels sit next to small but lively villages for a glimpse into local life, and being about an hour’s flight away from the national parks means you can go from a bush breakfast to seashore lounging in no time.
