Cross the border and the cosmopolitan splendour continues in soaring Kuala Lumpur. Then, just off the north-west coast, a slow pace of life takes hold quickly; days are filled with guided nature walks and sun lounger naps, and nights welcome fine dining feasts.

It’s been a whirlwind of a few days in Singapore! So far, we’ve explored the city from the thrilling vantage of a Vespa sidecar, toured some special neighbourhoods with poet Marc Nair, and met the gregarious Alvin Yapp at his home-turned-museum – The Intan. So today we’re starting easy and mindfully by meeting up again with our Vespa guide, Simon Wong, for a spot of Tai Chi in the park.

From one vibrant city to another, it’s my first time in Kuala Lumpur and I’ve fallen hard. After settling into our beautiful hotel, it was straight out onto the streets to explore on the back of a BMW motorbike. Whizzing first past landmarks like the King’s Palace, Lake Gardens and Independence Square, our final stop was the Batu Caves where we got our blood pumping climbing the 272 colourful steps to the temple at the top.

It’s our last day before we move to the blissful beaches of Langkawi – an anticipated respite from our busy start to the trip. Kuala Lumpur has been good to us though; we ate our way through the city on a foodie tour yesterday, and tonight we’re going out on a high with a visit to Bukit Melawati village to spot silvered lead monkeys and leisurely drift on a late evening cruise watching the fireflies dance as the sun goes down.

We’ve just got back from a permaculture walk around the hotel’s grounds, getting to know the lay of the land as well as the sustainability initiatives that mean so much here. I’ve decided it’s time for a little bit of exploration between dips in the pool though. We’ve got a trek lined up for tomorrow with one of the resident naturalists and, as a surprise, I’ve booked an island-hopping cruise planned in two days’ time.
