Zambia

  • Big river waterfall during dark

There may be no need for the classic beige suit, but the boots are essential in this home of the iconic walking safari that encapsulates the memory of 70s treks gone by.

There may be no need for the classic beige suit, but the boots are essential in this home of the iconic walking safari that encapsulates the memory of 70s treks gone by.

Culturally revered for the mighty Victoria Falls that just can’t help but charm, it’d be a mistake to imagine life in Zambia as being one that’s constrained to the usual boundaries. Rather, even the freshest of ramblers will get their kicks from heading further afield, with encounters of everything from a raw bush camp experience to sustainable and luxury lodges.

Better still, in wandering these less-trodden paths, there’s the delightful feeling of first discoveries from all the incredible joys in sight.

In pursuit of...

An aerial view of a river delta and fields
… a rugged safari experience

The bravest of couples, well-travelled adventurers, and those with only themselves to prove to; there’s no better way to test your safari limits than with the closest of wildlife encounters. Boots-on-the-ground means a closer study of the print of a lion’s paw or glancing the eyes of an elusive hippo as it tentatively emerges from a glassy river; hearts beat faster and the rush gets deeper, as new encounters make for the greatest of stories. And, because it wouldn’t be a challenge without raising the stakes, a sleep out in the wild landscape (luxe or lovably stripped back) is soundtracked by the laughter of hyenas and a cacophony of bird calls while gazing at the stars above.

A sense of place

Get to know our favourite spots in Zambia, from the pioneering pathways of South Luwanga National Park to the magical hidden gem of Kafue.

  • a giraffe standing in a forest
    South Luwanga National Park

An intrepid soul whose pioneering feet (literally) paved the way, the first walking safaris started here, and she’s keeping it classic for a reason. With hippos, giraffes, elephants, and a whole orchestra of bird song, the list goes on with some of the best wildlife you can find in these parts.

  • a body of water with trees and a sunset
    Lower Zambezi National Park

Home to the beating heart of the Zambezi River that makes these banks so hip and happening, there’s no better way to view it all than from the boats and canoes themselves. Sightings of big cats, wild dogs, elephants, and many a reptile are suspected, but what makes it so great is floating in the midst of it all.

  • a group of animals in a field with trees in the background
    Kafue

A hidden gem that surprisingly earns the title of the biggest national park in Zambia, all it takes is one visit to quickly turn the tides. Out-of-the-ordinary experiences are the norm here, with walking, canoe, and classic safaris being the perfect way to view the game; topped off, of course, with some of the most magical pink sunrises to grace the skies.

  • a river with a large body of water that turns into a waterfall
    Victoria Falls

Locally known as the ‘smoke that thunders’, her presence needs no introduction; but what makes this seventh wonder of the world so great, is the different ways you can approach it. With access provided from Zambia and Zimbabwe, the bonus in Zambia is the get-into-the-middle-of-it-all experiences, soaking in the Devil’s Pool and riskily peering over its bustling edge.

Africa

A land of colour and contrasts. Deep red skies, dazzling white sands and clear blue waters; chic cities and thrilling safari encounters – Africa stirs the senses and the soul.

  • A cheetah laying in the foreground with a safari car behind
    Botswana

You’ve never felt as remote as in Botswana, with its placid lagoons, eco-diverse island game reserve and the lunar-like salt flats of Makadikadi Basin.

    Explore
  • An African landscape with two natives walking
    Kenya

Bright red shukas, the savannah’s most notable characters, and a landscape of flat plains that billow into hills, Kenya is archetypal Africa.

    Explore
  • Baobabs trees lining dirt road in Madagascar on cloudy day
    Madagascar

Unspoilt and uncrowded, Madagascar is the land of the ‘blue safari’ – where snorkelling, diving and sailing in the warm turquoise waters is only paused for a bit of lemur spotting.

    Explore
  • View of old buildings, trees and mountains
    Morocco

Arabia’s mystical allure and Africa’s vibrancy converge in Morocco, refusing to give in to Western ways and instead delivering a splendid culture contrast that’s sure to stay rooted in traveller’s minds forever.

    Explore
  • A view of a boat from between trees
    Mozambique

A country still with some growing to do, these lesser-trodden coastlines that often act as an add-on to a South African safari are a rare find of authenticity-meets-blissfully-beachy break.

    Explore
  • Sandy dunes in a desert next to the sea
    Namibia

Ethereal expanses of dunes merge into wild, coastal wilderness in this sun-baked land, casting the spooky spell of the sands that’s all too exciting and easy to succumb to.

    Explore
  • A gorilla looking out into the jungle
    Rwanda

Untamed and mysterious, the sulky rainforests of Rwanda are a wildlife wonderland, where golden monkeys peak out from behind dense leaves, bushbuck scarper at the slightest of sounds and gorillas take over the mountains.

    Explore
  • A panoramic view of cape town at sunset
    South Africa

The ‘Rainbow Nation’ that earnt her stripes in a cacophony of languages, three buzzing cities, and everything from safaris to Winelands in-between; it’s not just a colourful diversity, but the sheer joy for surprises that keeps familiar feet coming back for more.

    Explore
  • A small herd of zebra grazing grass
    Tanzania

Tanzania is a Great Migration, the volcanic peaks watching over herds as they cross vast plains and indented craters, eyed intensely by the climbing lions from their treetop perches; but this book holds more than just its front cover.

    Explore
  • A sail boat at waters edge
    Zanzibar

The archipelago of Zanzibar is somewhat of a wildcard, but with its bohemian vibe, mellow pace and decidedly quieter yet still sugar-white sands, it gives the Maldives a run for its money.

    Explore
  • an elephant with tusks walking in tall grass
    Zimbabwe

Bringing off-the-beaten-track safari experiences that’re just as active as its dramatic Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe is no stranger to a thrilling escapade.
