Looking to ancient cultures as a source of inspiration, these spiritual stays leave a lasting impression by prompting personal growth.

Looking to ancient cultures as a source of inspiration, these spiritual stays leave a lasting impression by prompting personal growth.

Deep-rooted in destinations so different from home, it’s exclusive access to time-honoured traditions that takes travel already designed to revitalise that one step further into more meaningful territory. Handpicked for their unmistakeable sense of place, the journeys in this range are effortlessly immersive, and may just prompt that perspective shift you’ve been searching for.

So whether you’re travelling solo or venturing to calming corners of the world together, picture meditating alongside Buddhist monks in the valleys of Bhutan; learning how to live off the land in rural Tuscany; or taking part in the storytelling traditions of the Navajo Nation in the Arizona desert. Each are extraordinary opportunities in their own ways, yet all are guided by a grounding sense of reflection found in spiritual practices and compelling creativity. Our idea of a souvenir here is adopting a slightly different mindset, finding a new favourite ritual, or returning with a little lifestyle lift. In other words, these are experiences curated to be quietly transformative.

Minimalist desert terrace with wooden loungers overlooking sculptural rock formations and open skies.

1. Amangiri
USA

Seemingly built from the rocky plateau it calls home, Amangiri mirrors the balance of drama and repose of its Arizona desert home. Literally meaning ‘peaceful mountain’, there’s not a soul around for miles, and with the land it occupies being within the Navajo Nation, there’s a spiritual quality that’s ever present; reflected in an abundance of culture-rich experiences and adventures in the great outdoors.

As a brand, Aman are hailed by their adoring acolytes for their zen-inducing spas, and the one at Amangiri follows suit. At roughly over half an acre in size, there are plenty of calming corners to discover split across different areas, including a floatation therapy zone, outdoor treatment terraces and a water pavilion for a hydrotherapy circuit, while yoga and meditation can be practised atop the rocks to sweeping views of the canyon.

Something special
A highlight here and across the Aman portfolio, a partnership with esteemed tennis pro, Novak Djokovic, has elevated the brand’s reputation for well-being to new heights. Aptly named Longevity Pathways, this unique wellness concept features programmes designed to share the secrets to a better and longer life.

Carrier recommends
While Amangiri can be enjoyed year-round, its desert location makes it susceptible to extreme summer heat – hindering some activities. To avoid this, travelling during spring (April and May) or autumn (September and October) is highly recommended. And while it’s easy to spend a week or more here, a restorative rest can be slotted into a two- or three-week itinerary taking in the likes of Las Vegas and California’s highlights.

Extraordinary
experiences

    • Luxury canvas tent set in a desert landscape with sandstone formations and dry scrub under soft evening light.
Venture down the Camp Sarika Mindfulness Path

Seperate from the main resort sits Camp Sarika, a haven of tented pavilions where Aman’s signature spa experience takes on an even more exclusive air. Treatments are done in the privacy of the pavilions; either stand-alone or as part of a Camp Sarika Journeys itinerary – like the Mindfulness Path. Combining the likes of breathwork, meditation, massage and aromatherapy, the multi-day programme aims to bring awareness back to the present and reconnect with nature.

    • Two people standing on a rocky overlook wrapped in traditional blankets, gazing across a vast desert landscape.
Participate in the Navajo tradition of storytelling

The largest Native American tribe in the country, Amangiri sits proudly within the borders of the Navajo Nation. Within this soulful culture, storytelling is a central and proud tradition, serving as a way of passing down the history, beliefs and principles of the area’s indigenous people. From stories of characters long since passed to the wildlife that the Nation shares its land with, gather around a fire for an hour of tales that both captivate and inspire.

    • Close‑up of hands weaving a small dreamcatcher with fine thread in warm indoor light.
      Craft your own delicate dreamcatcher

A tradition originating from the Ojibwe tribe, over the years, the dreamcatcher has become a famous part of the wider Native American culture. While undeniably aesthetic, their core purpose is to offer protection while you sleep, catching all of the nightmares in their intricate webs while letting the good dreams flow through. During a hands-on workshop, craft your own dreamcatcher from local Navajo materials while finding out even more about these special trinkets.

2. Aman Kyoto
Japan

Contemporary outdoor terrace at Aman Kyoto with fire pit seating surrounded by vibrant autumn foliage.

2. Aman Kyoto
Japan

A destination that could never be left out of the wellness conversation, Japan’s reputation for serenity is rooted in the notions of Ichi-go Ichi-e (an appreciation for the present moment), Wabi Sabi (seeing beauty in imperfections), Kaizen (continuous improvement) and Ikigai (sense of purpose), to name just a few. Though in this instance, it’s the city of Kyoto we’ve handpicked to highlight.

The cultural heart of the archipelago, it’s 17 UNESCO sites offer a wealth of opportunities to learn about this storied city, before retreating to the calm of Aman Kyoto. Surrounded by gardens set withing 32 hectares of forest, Japanese maples and Kitayama cedars shade this Ryokan-inspired property at the foot of Mount Hidari Daimonji. Minimal interiors keep the focus on the forest’s ever-changing colour palette, providing constant inspiration for creativity – very apt given its 17th-century art village history. A place for culturally curious travellers in search of quiet surroundings, expect to explore ancient heritage in nearby temples, and unwind in a private onsen experience.

Artistry is found everywhere you look here, and the kaiseki cuisine of Taka-An restaurant is no exception. Created in homage to artist and polymath Honami Koetsu – who’s creative influence shaped the culture of the Takagamine district Aman Kyoto calls home – each meal by Executive Chef Shinichirō Takagi uses seasonal produce and follows the traditional omakase dining experience. More than a meal, it becomes a moment of cultural immersion and creative expression.

Carrier recommends
Known to few as a beautiful time of year to travel to Japan, visiting in late November to early December tops our list of recommendations for Kyoto. Landscapes painted by the rich colours of autumn are the perfect antidote to the slight chill just beginning to creep into the air, but it’s the kind of crisp cool that’s always paired with bright sunshine. A four-night stay would be ideal, spent in the secluded Washigamine or Takagamine pavilions.

    • A close up image of a woman's hands performing a Japanese tea ceremony
Take part in a traditional tea ceremony

A tradition harking back centuries to when Zen monks first brought tea to Japan, tea ceremonies – or chanoyu – are a giant of Japanese culture. Refined and remarkably tranquil, you’ll watch as the host performs a carefully choreographed ritual, displaying selfless hospitality known in Japan as omotenashi. Add the serene setting of a forest garden and this experience becomes all the more meditative.

    • A traditional street in Japan with a temple in view at the far end
      Tour temples with exclusive access

Offering a window to ancient culture, Kyoto’s many temples are perhaps the most popular of its tourist attractions. See behind one such staggering facade in a private guided tour, taking in the quiet magnificence of a UNESCO World Heritage temple after opening hours.

    • A person arranging the branches of a plant in a vase of water
Try the mindful art of Ikebana

A meeting of beauty, nature and meditative practices, Ikebana (meaning giving life to flowers) is an important feature of the spiritual Shinto religion. Lead by an Ikebana expert, a session covers the arrangement of seasonal flowers into artful combinations of colour and form, believed to refresh the body and spirit by expressing emotion through the chosen arrangements. Taking things one step further, guests can go beyond Ikebana to miniature garden design if they so wish.

3. Borgo Pignano
Italy

Aerial view of a historic countryside estate surrounded by trees, terraces, and a pool set within rolling hills.

3. Borgo Pignano
Italy

Nestled in 750 organic acres in the rural Tuscan hills, this pastoral palace is the place to retreat for a slow and considered stay. Its roots both physical and figurative date back centuries, and the tender love and care bestowed by its staff is on full display. A homestead with heart, everyone finds their corner easily for a little R&R – whatever that may look like.

Hands-on workshops from cooking to natural soap making take advantage of the ingredients grown within the estate. If practical skills aren’t a strong suit, Mother Nature’s finest can still be enjoyed through horseback rides, foraging, and tours of Pignano’s agricultural areas. And if all that seems a bit much, alone time to tune out completely is found in the limestone winery-turned-spa or beside the infinity pool with a good book.

Something special
It doesn’t get more self-sufficient and farm-to-table than the fine fare served here. In homage to the region, heirloom fruit and vegetables are grown in the two-and-a-half-acre gardens. Crops like olives, grains and seeds are used to make produce like pasta, oils and jam (and provide food for the farm’s animals), and an on-site apiary and vineyards are put to good use. All of which is served both on the menu and in the farm shop.

Carrier recommends
Though the sights of Italy’s cities may be tempting, we think three nights should be dedicated to the countryside surrounds of Borgo Pignano, at least. Really, five nights would be the ideal, allowing for a full switch off and reboot. With that in mind, where you lay your head is important too; while each suite has its perks, some of the most charming reside in the main building – complete with deep bathtubs and picture-perfect views.

Extraordinary
experiences

    • Paper bags filled with grains displayed alongside dried flowers and handmade soaps on a wooden table.
      Harvest the estate’s brilliant botanicals

In true homestead style, Borgo Pignano’s borders are brimming with local flora. Joining the hotel’s resident herbalist, Lisabetta, on a guided walk, learn all about the edible plants and herbs that grow around the estate – both cultivated and wild. Used in both traditional fare and wellness remedies, after foraging there is time to prepare your ingredients under Lisabetta’s expert eye for a herbal tea tasting, opening tastebuds up to a whole new world of flavours.

    • Close‑up of hands holding a stack of artisanal soaps in natural tones against a rustic wooden backdrop.
Delve deeper into herbal remedies or craft your own cosmetics

Whether following on from a foraging excursion or done simply as a standalone experience, there’s a lot to be learned in the estate’s laboratory. During a herbal class, learn the healing benefits of plant life and the extraction methods used by the on-site team to prepare products. During an organic cosmetic class, there’s the chance to produce a variety of beauty products from oils and perfumes to creams and ointments.

    • Close-up of a person’s hand gently touching plants on a forest floor among greenery and soft daylight.
Tune into nature during a forest bathing session

Restoring the connection between people and nature, forest bathing is renowned for its benefits to well-being. Heading into the forest with a guide, stop at a quiet spot with only birdsong and the breeze for company, and settle down to meditate using special breathing techniques to calm the mind and body. At the very least, this practice reduces stress levels and improves mood, at most, it strengthens both the immune system and connection with nature.

4. Gangtey Lodge
Bhutan

Elegant lounge interior framed by painted walls and large windows, opening onto sweeping mountain views.

4. Gangtey Lodge
Bhutan

Personal growth is greeted by exposure to another culture in far-flung Bhutan, where just 12 farmhouse suites comprise Gangtey Lodge, nestled at the heart of a U-shaped valley. Such landscapes of peaks and troughs are common across these ancient lands, and each are believed to have their own individual character. Here, Phobjika Valley is ‘the valley of stillness’, very apt for a destination centred around Buddhist practice and time spent in nature.

A stay here is ideal for those searching for something new, to find joy in experiencing a lifestyle different form their own, all while traversing the lodge’s five key areas of well-being; physical, spiritual, emotional, social and intellectual. To say that guests feel both culturally and personally enriched as they say goodbye to this small enclave of a spiritual nation is an understatement.

Something special
Sitting down to dine on a private breakfast (or lunch) experience looks a little different at Gangtey Lodge. Held within the 17th-century Gangtey Goenpa (the neighbouring monastery), the experience begins with Thsewang Prayer alongside Buddhist Monks. A half-hour session for personal empowerment, wish fulfilment and a healthy life, it involves the lighting of butter lamps, a personal blessing from the Tulku, and an exclusive tour of the Monastery – all before breakfast.

Carrier recommends
Make the most of spectacular views from dawn to dusk. Situated in the wide glacial Phobjika Valley, request a first-floor farmhouse suite to wake to the best views on offer. And if gazing out over the nature reserve that Gangtey Lodge calls home isn’t enough, we’d recommend getting out into the wild and hiking along ancient trails through blue pine forests to really enjoy such picture-perfect surroundings.

Extraordinary
experiences

    • Monks gathered inside a richly decorated temple hall, seated as part of a traditional ceremony.
      Meditate alongside Buddhist monks

A short stroll from Gangtey Lodge lies The Shedra, a Buddhist college where evening classes are held to allow guests a rare opportunity to see the inner workings of a monastery. Experienced lamas lead meditation and discussion on compassion and Shamata – meaning tranquillity – with a goal of overcoming stress, moving into a peaceful mindset and promoting kindness. It’s almost a given to feel a real sense of rejuvenation as a result.

    • Person soaking in a wooden hot bath with floating botanicals, overlooking a scenic mountain landscape through large windows.
Embrace the healing warmth of nature

Hot stone baths are an ancient Bhutanese tradition. In this iteration, boulders sourced from a nearby river are used to heat a bathtub expertly crafted from local pinewood. In a relaxing soak, see how heat from the water, minerals released from the rocks, plus herbs foraged from the forest hold a plethora of medicinal benefits.

    • Two people practising archery outdoors, with one guiding the other’s stance beside a traditional building.
Try your hand at archery and darts

Bhutan’s national sport, Dha, or archery is a tricky one to master, but well worth the sense of accomplishment. The most popular sport for the Bhutanese people (alongside Khuru, or darts), test your skills with a traditional bow and arrow, learning technique tips from the accomplished resident archers at Gangtey Lodge.

5. Palmaïa – The House of AïA
Mexico

A thatched mushroom-shaped pavilion and tall female statue surrounded by lush greenery on a pristine beach beneath a clear sky with the ocean in the background.

5. Palmaïa – The House of AïA
Mexico

Set in the spiritual space of Riviera Maya, inner harmony is effortless at this all-inclusive holistic wellness resort. A destination that’s always at its best, Palmaïa is ready to mindfully reshape how both well-being buffs and those just starting their journeys think about and practise wellness at any time of year. But any worries over regimens can be cast to the wind – it’s all very easy breezy when it comes to the activities.

A relatively under-the-radar spot, fellow guests tend to be of a like mind, which makes group classes a joy and the communal areas hubs for social connection and friendly interactions. Sessions can be made private, however, to allow for a more personal and relaxed experience. Combined with the tranquil environment and soulful approach to self-purpose, Palmaïa is the kind of place that resonates long after you leave, and definitely tempts you back in for more.

Something special
Unlike other health retreats, time at Palmaïa isn’t bound by strict diets or schedules. Encouraging guests to go with the flow, there’s no need to prebook activities; instead, you can see what’s on offer that day and decide accordingly. The resort is also vegan-friendly with all meals starting out plant based, but there’s the freedom to add protein and dairy with ease. It’s Palmaïa’s belief that wellness may be key, but so is a relaxing holiday.

Carrier recommends
Caught between the ocean and jungle, there’s plenty to make a week or so here easily done and refreshingly fulfilling. However, venturing here either before or after an itinerary in holistic hotspot California – where both age-old practices and newer wellness trends collide – is a sure way to capitalise on conscious living. And with flight times being sub-five hours, not too much time has to be taken out of the trip for travel.

Extraordinary
experiences

    • Two people standing in a tropical forest during a ceremonial moment, with one holding a vessel and guiding the interaction.
Take part in a traditional Temazcal ceremony

Meaning ‘House of Heat’ in the Nahutai language, this ancient Mesoamerican tradition lives up to its name. Designed to cleanse and renew the body and spirit and release pent-up feelings, the ceremony begins by entering a stone dome sauna heated by volcanic rocks. There are then four rounds of alternating between basking in the heat of herb-infused steam and the relief of cool air to the sound of chants and drums, before emerging refreshed and invigorated.

    • Group seated on cushions in a wellness space during a guided sound healing session with a singing bowl.
Experience sound healing but not as you know it

Music is a language we can all speak, and whatever the genre we choose there’s no denying that it has the power to heal. By harnessing the rhythms and instruments of ancient African and Mesopotamian cultures, Palmaïa have created a programme of events that sees musicians combine with resident and visiting DJs to create nightly soundscapes. All inspired by the likes of mythology and the moon and played down at the beach club.

    • Small group gathered in a lush jungle clearing performing a traditional ritual with natural offerings arranged on the ground.
Journey through the Portals of Practice with a private practitioner

More than 50 holistic wellness activities make up this signature programme designed to guide guests down a path of growth – whether that be spiritually, physically or through a skill. Spanning well-known favourites like painting classes, music lessons and yoga, to more niche topics like earthly connection and feminine energy ceremonies, each class is taught by a specialist Architect of Life. These activities are usually done in groups, but special one-on-one sessions allow for a more tailored and personal approach.
