Perched on a hilltop with the wilderness of South Luangwa unfolding as far as the eye can see, ten vista suites reinvigorate this private retreat first built for Zambia’s inaugural president.
Affectionately named after the owners’ two loves, their son and the Zambezi River itself, Lolebezi’s mission is an obvious one: to immerse guests into the beauty of its homeland alongside their nearest and dearest. Though exclusive in both location and form, there’s no picking style over substance here. Expect exciting exploration by foot, water and four wheels from a near endless list of activities that make the most of the diverse wildlife on offer.
Getting out and about, whether in-camp or further afield, the likes of canoe trips, nocturnal safaris and a schooling in tracking reserved just for little ones feature on the agenda. While the likes of cinema and boma nights slow the pace down without sacrificing on wow-factor.
Eco-conscious in both construction and operation, Lolebezi sets the bar high for safari chic. Recycled materials perfectly pair with floor-to-ceiling glass to make the most of the location. While inside, local heritage is displayed through artwork and mid-century modern silhouettes are given a bushcamp makeover, with a little beachy twist from a cool-toned colour palette and materials like rattan and beading.
Thanks to the limited number of suites, the guests that walk the stilted pathways around the property are a like-minded bunch, eager to enjoy the privacy of the area in peace, yet relish gathering around the firepit or on the comfy sofas in the bar to regale their companions with tales of the day’s adventures.
It’s no mystery as to why Lolebezi is hailed as one of the most luxurious camps in the area. One kilometre of private riverfront means the only neighbours that wander by are the four-legged kind, making in-camp game viewing a near daily occurrence – particularly from the decks of the suites, equipped with private plunge pools that jut out towards the water. But what really makes the Lolebezi experience is the people: guides who are bursting to show off their knowledge of the local wildlife, chefs who cater to fussy eaters, and staff who go above and beyond to make everything special.
Downtime in this corner of the world comes in two forms: delectable dining and sumptuous spa treatments. The talented chef’s creations can be savoured in spots all over the camp, including romantic moments on private decks and the boma that hosts sociable barbecues on a regular basis – enhanced by an extensive collection of South African wines of course. The spa, on the other hand, is intimately tucked a short walk away from the action of the main lodge. Equipped with a shaded deck looking out over the lagoon, it demands for moments of tea-sipping peace.
As part of the African Bush Camps family, Lolebezi contributes to some of the area’s best work in conservation and community. Whether fully-fledged eco-warriors or just curious to learn more, taking some time away from game drives to visit the Conservation Lower Zambezi headquarters is highly encouraged. Here, guests dig deep into initiatives like the Kufadza female scouts – a group of specially trained women with a mission to help the human-wildlife conflict by educating locals on how to live alongside animals and patrolling in search of poaching activity.
