New York

  • Aerial view of Manhattan, New York, United States of America

The steeliest shapeshifter of cityscape times, not even a local can pin her down – creating a smorgasbord of opportunities for even the littlest apples to give it a good go and start trying.

The steeliest shapeshifter of cityscape times, not even a local can pin her down – creating a smorgasbord of opportunities for even the littlest apples to give it a good go and start trying.

Know her by name or know her by nature, this city that never sleeps has only one secret. And while she’ll play friends at first (this is New York, after all) with all her postcard landmarks; those in the know approach the Top of the Rock lookout and a whizz-around Times Square with a sharp mind to keep on second-guessing. Inventing new shades of personality almost overnight, her hidden-gem neighbourhoods span the High-Line to Hudson Yards; all set to bring out that very sense of self-discovery that turns shopaholics into a born-again guru for green spaces.

Scrumptious fingers in every pie (for you will find a lot of them), there’s a literal flavour for everyone. So who could ever blame her for enticing us to keep on cracking her code to reveal her simple promise that she’ll always keep on moving.

In pursuit of…

Couple relaxing in swimming pool on hotel rooftop
...relinquishing the illusion of time

Clocks have been rebelling here for longer than sundials themselves; making everyone an early bird and night owl in equal doses. Staying awake on a fusion of addictively great food and dopamine alone (there’s just always something to do), days are passed rubbing shoulder-to-shoulder at all the biggest sports games, getting into the downward dog atop the empire state building, or clashing heads with fashionistas and historians over at the Met. While nights bring the promise of all the best rooftop bars, the smooth jazz and blues of Harlem’s living-it-up side streets, and the magical moment of going backstage at a Broadway show.

Simone de Beauvoir, French Philosopher
“There is something in the New York air that makes sleep useless.”

A sense of place

Get to know our favourite spots across the five boroughs of New York, from Midtown darlings to the most up-and-coming neighbourhoods.

  • Concrete curving exterior of the Guggenheim Museum in New York
    Upper-East Side

Where Breakfast at Tiffany’s meets Gossip Girl meets the Met Gala. Synonymous with all the finer things in life, the worldly-wise make headway for the refines of Museum Mile, while ritzy-glitzy wanderers revel in dipping into local delicacies like a home-grown lady who lunches.

  • Sunset light shining on the buildings and cars on 42nd Street in Midtown New York City

The American Dream materialised. Home to the brainchild of shopping itself down on Fifth Avenue, a moment in the movies at Central Park, the legendary Empire State Building and the ironically friendly streets at Hell’s Kitchen. This is the New York that gets all hearts pumping for more.

  • Looking down on time square at night
    Times Square

What dreams are made of. Put the glad rags on for the Broadway shows, soak in the view at the top of the Rockefeller Center, or just simply stand mesmerised by its flashing lights. We wouldn’t be the ones to judge.

  • A group of people sitting on steps next to a body of water
    Little Island

A little park acting as a big reminder that this concrete jungle is nothing without its shade of green. Floating above the Hudson River on its tulip-like blocks; this playground for the young at heart provides a hub of weaving paths and even an amphitheatre to let the hours pass by. All to the sublime scenery of a city skyline that’s a photographer’s dream by sunset.

  • New York city skyline seen over buildings and white leaf trees

The glistening meeting point of the Gilded Age elite, North of Madison Square Park now revives its legacy as the go-to spot for culture, food and business. Bringing everything from trendy bars to the epic feat of shopping Fifth Avenue, it’s a true temptress to those that don’t mind a little indulgence.

  • Looking up at the statue of liberty
    Staten Island

A starting point to find New York’s Lady of Liberty, this trip will always be one for the bucket list. Best experienced by getting into the heart of it all in the head of Liberty’s iconic look-out crown.

  • "Walk sign" traffic light and one way sign
    Downtown Manhattan

Just south of the hubbub, these famous neighbourhood names might just sound familiar; with Soho and Chelsea, Greenwich and West Village all inviting a comparably cool art scene and relaxed brunching vibe. Yet, with the trendy newcomer over at the Seaport District also making it’s mark, there’s always a chance to venture further afield in search of culinary and cultural sparks of joy.

  • Two bicycles in front of a brownstone building in neighborhood of Brooklyn Heights, New York

Taking in a snapshot of your very own view from the bridge, Brooklyn steps in with its beautiful green spaces at State Park and its independent neighbourhood vibe. Our favourite spot being the old warehouse at Time Out, for its bustling bars, hotbed restaurants, and all the latest arts and culture snuggled under one roof.

  • Couple relaxing in swimming pool on hotel rooftop
    Hudson Yards

The latest star in NYCS’s up-and-coming vibrant neighbourhood scene, Hudson Yards brings all the excitement of the cityscape in an excitably manageable boundary. Including a multitude of shops and restaurants, a Vessel-like monument, a 100th-floor outdoor observation deck, a gallery hopping walk and an entire performance centre to name but a few.

  • Brooklyn bridge walkway in the afternoon. Urban skyline is in the background
    The Highline

A loveable testament to the fact that if there’s one thing New Yorkers do best, it’s finding that little spark of potential in the most unlikely of places. This old industrial railway line is the neighbourhood’s latest innovation to times gone by, now turned into an iconic nature/art-walk-come-‘park in the sky’ for exploring the Hudson River and NYC like a local.
