With a location that none can match and thoughtful, warm staff who instantly make you feel at home, it’s no wonder this Mauritian icon has garnered its cult-like following.
A little Maldivian glitz has been sprinkled in the popularly playful village of Grand Baie. By day, the low-key luxe crowd emerge from hiding to slink from their swanky Kelly Hoppen-deigned sanctuaries and their private pools to shaded sun loungers on the area’s most coveted beach.
By night, they become social butterflies, being seen sipping on cocktails to panoramic views in the rooftop bar – Bisou – before donning their dancing shoes to visit Asian-inspired restaurant Ai KISU, and its club below. But it’s not all just about fun and games, LUX* Grand Baie is a place with a conscience for both its guests and surroundings, you just have to know where to look.
Unveiling itself at the end of 2021, LUX* Grand Baie had the honour of calling itself the first brand new property on the Mauritian hotel scene for over a decade. More boutique in style than its siblings, 116 keys make it an intimate affair with inspiration taken from the modern traveller.
The result being a more up-to-date approach of balancing the sleek with the organic; choosing in its architecture to embrace the natural landscape that surrounds it instead of polishing the edges.
Physically, mindfully and spiritually, well-being is a huge focus here. Taking the form of the brand’s “Collectable Experiences”, activities both in-resort and further afield aim to have each guest gather an ensemble of experiences that will stay with them long after they’ve returned home. Think spa treatments to heal the body, digital detoxes to better the mind, and – because the people are credited as the true essence of the resort – a real focus on quality time with resident communities to warm the spirit.
Now, back to wellness – LUX*’s passion manifested in this resort. Three floors make up the health centre with a gym, the LUX Me Spa and cycling studio that hosts online classes for guests even after they return home. On the top, there’s the open-air studio with two Olympic-standard tracks. Those rest days are taken care of too, savouring the fresh cuisine at Beach Rouge’s beach club and indulging in cocktails and a DJ set at Ai KISU’s private night club.
As champions of all things Mauritius, a chance to show off the surrounding nature is always welcomed. No less than seven waterfalls are on the agenda when it comes to this specific trek for the whole tribe; where restoring dips under the cascading water are followed by a picnic lunch with views across the island.
We highly recommend taking out a full day to better both the mind and body in this wild landscape.
