Swapping game drives for farm life and dusty savannahs for bustling streets, experience a different side of South Africa’s west – wildlife still guaranteed.
King of Africa’s urban jungles, the ‘Mother City’ is where the journey begins. Hidden in the shadow of Table Mountain, this vibrant city invites scavenger hunts of all shapes and sizes, ticking off the essential sights from historic gardens and street art alleys, to nature trails from the mountain to the sea.
Then, the winelands are given a kid-approved makeover at a working wine and fruit farm in the Drakenstein Valley. Getting their hands dirty by helping out with the animals, harvesting veg from the gardens and making their own bread. Gansbaai rounds off the trip, the Marine Big 5 here aren’t the only things to prompt involuntary squeals of delight though, with fairies being sought in the 1,500-year-old Milkwood forest and penguin friends being made at Betty's Bay.

Day 9 - 13
Whale Coast
Stay at: Grootbos Private Nature ReserveA southernmost road trip that’ll tick any horticulturist’s boxes, this route earnt its name for a reason. Whether it’s the beautiful lagoons, rich forests, limestone cliffs or mountain ranges that are playing host to a plethora of adrenaline-filled activities, it's hard to imagine taking a reason for a breather. That is, of course, until the iconic Hermanus comes into sight; where whale pods go proudly spouting by.

Cape Town
Breakfast on Table Mountain really sets the tone for today before we returned to sea level to paddle board along the V&A waterfront. I felt particularly bold amd even tries my hand at navigating the family to Sea Point Promenade (I won't say whether I was successful or not...) Tomorrow we're leaving the city behind and making our way to the peninsula and Kalk Bay!

Franschhoek
The winelands have proven not just to be for us grown-ups but an amazing place for the kids too! They've gotten hands on with the likes of the garden, helping out by harvesting fruit and veg, and in the kitchen where they've helped the bakers knead and cook (very tasty) loaves. Morning bike rides anf canoeing around the nearby dam have also been hghlights of our stay here.

Whale Coast
We've made it to Grootbos Private Nature Reserve for our final leg of the trip! Along the way here visited a huge colony of penguins at Betty’s Bay (a hidden gem, if you ask me), and followed it up with a picnic on the beach.

We head home tomorrow, I can't believe the trip is coming to an wend. But for today, we're heading into Milkwood forest to hunt for fairies between its twisting trees and explore the surrounding area on horseback. The kids are so excited... and so am I if I'm being honest.
