Majestic mountains & faraway sands

Despite the clamour of the city, the first two days are spent easing in gently. Spend time by the pool or in the spa to rejuvenate after the flight before heading out for a private evening tour of Muscat. Including one of the oldest markets in Oman, the Muttrah Souks, the Bait Al Zubair museum with its fine collection of traditional costumes, jewellery and weapons, and stop offs outside the Al Alam Palace and Mirani and Jalali forts.

Trade in the city for dramatic dunes and enjoy complete seclusion during a night at Wahiba Desert Sands Camp. After a camel ride to the gloriously private spot, sip on tea or coffee and wait for your private chef to cook up a storm, while the absolute silence and hypnotising hues of sunset in the desert take hold.

Following stop offs en route at the Ibra women’s market, Birkat Al Mouz village and Jebel Akhdar (of rose growing fame), arrive in the iconic Omani mountains for the next three nights. Here, a plethora of activities await, from rock climbing on Oman's highest via ferrata, wandering the magical butterfly trail, hiking and star gazing. Then, spend a day experiencing local life by visiting the markets in Nizwa – Oman’s former capital – and its 17th century fort.

To round off the trip, it’s back to the edge of Muscat where time is mainly spent on the water. Head out on a boat trip to spot some playful dolphins before jumping in at a snorkelling spot. There’s also chance to tour the Daymaniyat Islands – nine uninhabited islets that make up a natural preserve that is home to turtles. Days at sea are split up by time on land though, visiting the ornate Grand Mosque and Royal Opera House.
