Luxury Bhutan holidays

Imbued with a sense of colourful spirituality Bhutan prompts meditation and relaxation, its majestic snowcapped mountains providing a mesmerising backdrop.

There are few places more spiritual than the Himalayas, and few kingdoms more mysterious than Bhutan. One of the last pristine mountain cultures on earth, this ‘Land of the Thunder Dragon’ between India and Tibet is a country riven with deep, pine-clad valleys, where ancient monasteries cling to steep hillsides and snow-tipped ranges wrapped in mist rise dramatically into the crystal clear air. Expect to stumble across orange-robed Buddhist monks, making their way past colourful prayer flags to monasteries known locally as Dzongs. A trip to Thimphu, home to the cherished royal family, is a must, as is a trek up to Tiger’s Nest monastery, which sits precariously on the high slopes of the beautiful Paro Valley.

En route, pass grazing yaks on slopes carpeted with wild flowers, terraced paddy fields and ornately painted farmhouses in remote villages ever alive with colourful celebrations, dancing and music. These are the vistas afforded by Bhutan’s ravishing selection of mountain lodges and retreats, where the traveller has the opportunity to unwind in the hands of therapists trained in Bhutanese treatments such as hot stone baths – perfect after a brisk walk to a local village to see a way of life virtually unchanged for centuries. Looking down on the world from such a height instils a deep sensation of tranquillity and inner calm.

In pursuit of…

…quiet wonder

In Bhutan, fulfilment comes from the deep harmony between nature, people and spirit. Prayer flags colour high passes, rivers thread through peaceful valleys and monasteries echo with centuries of ritual. Guided by a national ethos that prioritises balance and well-being, daily life invites reflection rather than rush. From misty forests to cliffside temples, Bhutan offers a rare sense of calm and a gentle reminder of what truly matters.

A sense of place

Discover Bhutan’s most captivating regions, from the pine‑scented stillness of Bumthang’s sacred valleys to the vibrant energy of Thimphu, the world’s only capital without traffic lights.

  • Thimphu

Bhutan’s capital balances modern life with deep‑rooted tradition. Monasteries, markets and museums sit alongside boutique shops and lively restaurants, while forested hills and mountain viewpoints are never far away. Despite being the country’s busiest hub, Thimphu retains a welcoming, village‑like atmosphere, the ideal gateway to Bhutanese culture.

  • Bumthang

Bumthang is a landscape of ancient temples, revered monasteries and forested valleys alive with folklore. Wandering between its dzongs, traditional villages and sacred sites reveals a deep sense of tranquillity. Considered Bhutan’s spiritual heart, gentle hikes here lead through pine forests and farmlands where the pace of life feels timeless.

  • Gangtey (Phobjikha Valley)

A vast glacial valley framed by sweeping meadows, Gangtey is renowned for its peaceful beauty and as the winter home of the rare black‑necked cranes. Dominated by Gangtey Goemba monastery, the area feels untouched and remote. Here, boardwalks, nature trails and village paths invite slow exploration amid one of Bhutan’s most striking landscapes.

  • Paro

Paro is Bhutan at its most iconic, home to emerald rice fields, riverside dzongs and the legendary Tiger’s Nest clinging to a cliffside. Traditional farmhouses dot the valley, while its lively main street offers artisan shops and cafes. With scenic day hikes and important cultural sites, Paro provides the perfect introduction to the country’s heritage.

  • Punakha

Blessed with a warmer climate and fertile terraces, Punakha is shaped by the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu rivers that meet beneath its majestic riverside dzong. Suspension bridges, orchards and fertile farmlands create an inviting landscape for gentle walks and cycling. The valley’s slower rhythm offers a soothing contrast to Bhutan’s higher, cooler regions.

Cambodia exudes a mysticism that’s hard to emulate, the not-so-secret ingredients of which come in the form of its extraordinary jungle ruins, Khmer villages, buttery beaches and cities of old-meets-new.
