Luxury Amalfi Coast and Bay of Naples holidays

  • The cliffside village of Positano with different coloured buildings with the busy pebble beach and small boats in front

Though gifted with nature both picturesque and powerful, there’s a historical charm that tempts a closer look at Italy’s Amalfi Coast and Bay of Naples.

Though gifted with nature both picturesque and powerful, there’s a historical charm that tempts a closer look at Italy’s Amalfi Coast and Bay of Naples.

Few stretches of coastline can compete with the dramatic cliffs and tangy terraced lemon groves of the Amalfi Coast, where a largely traffic-free resort – christened Ravello – perches high above the waves. The inspiration of many a writer; days here melt from meandering through the gardens and grottos of centuries-old villas. In Positano, the worlds of food, fashion and faith collide on a slow wander from boutique shops to the domed Church of Santa Maria Assunta, interspersed with cuisine rooted in its fishing village past. All pastel colours and twisting lanes, maritime powerhouse Amalfi rivals Positano for photo-worthy backdrops although on a smaller scale. Over on Capri, a heady air of romance surrounds the upmarket hangouts and famous sea caves – even drifting its way down the Phoenician Steps connecting Anacapri to the sea.

In the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, Naples boasts a timeline that is likely even older than Rome’s; it’s lived-in streets rewinding the clock with the likes of Galleria Umberto I’s 19th-cenury architecture, the delightful hand-crafted nativities of Via San Gregorio Armeno (or ‘Christmas Alley’), and Via Tribunali’s restaurants specialising in Naples’ most famous progeny – pizza. And below street level, a subterranean world entices the dark tourism crowd in the city’s catacombs; the same crowd that usually venture over to a place trapped in time – Pompeii. Meanwhile, past the city’s oldest castle – Castel dell-Ovo – and into the Bay of Naples is understated Ischia Island. Life here revolves around a volcanic heritage that has resulted in lush botanical gardens to wander, wine courtesy of ash-rich soil to be savoured and natural thermal pools to dive right into.

Fresh lemons in a mesh bag on a white table with a straw hat under leafy shade in a rustic outdoor setting.
Charming narrow street in Naples with outdoor café seating under an archway and hanging decorations.

experiences

    • White sailboat anchored near towering limestone cliffs and turquoise waters off the coast of Capri, Italy.
Enjoy a romantic sunset cruise followed by dinner on Procida

As the sun starts to descend, board a private boat to sail the calm waters on the way to Procida island, where dinner waits in a restaurant by the sea. Later, sail back beneath a blanket of stars for a magical end to the evening.

    • A three-tier stand holding hand-crafted souveniers in Capri.
Take retail therapy up a level with a tour of Capri’s artisan shops

In the heart of the island, work your way through the shopping streets surrounding the famous Piazzetta, visiting the likes of historic Carthusia perfumery and a textile workshop specialising in loom weaving, with a stop at the Gardens of Augustus on the way. Later, at an expert shoemaker, learn how to craft the perfect pair of Capri sandals, the very pair that will be taken home as a gift.

    • Two plates of pasta with a small bowl of cheese and a jug of olive pil on a white table
Settle in for dinner in the home of a Naples local

Experience a taste of tradition in Naples by skirting past the popular restaurants and indulging in regional cuisine in an intimate dinner with a local, getting under the skin of Campanian food culture in their welcoming and homely abode.
