Its beauty makes it an ever-popular destination, but with a couple of under-the-radar locations and thoughtful alternatives, it’s easy to slip past the crowds.
The journey starts in Amalfi, famed for its cathedral and buzzing town square. Time here is spent exploring the sights in exclusive comfort aboard a private yacht and discovering the flourishing landscape, before moving onto pretty-as-a-picture Anacapri. A few nights on Ischia come with surprises like a night in a lighthouse, while the last stop – Naples – brims with historic treasures to explore.

It’s been a long time coming but we’ve finally made it to the Amalfi Coast – a place that’s long been on our bucket lists. After a day to ourselves settling in, we’re now getting ready for a full day yacht trip to explore the area. The itinerary is entirely up to us, dropping anchor wherever we fancy to swim or venture ashore to explore the towns and villages – Conca dei Marini and Positano are top of the list.

While we spent most of our time on the ocean yesterday, today we headed inland to the verdant Valley of the Mills and its nature reserve. The area is full of photo-worthy streams and waterfalls that help the biodiversity to thrive. Tomorrow, we move onto Capri – the less-crowded Anacapri to be exact. It's all about tradition there, and we’ve got a guided tour of the artisan workshops lined up to help us get under the skin of it all.

We packed a lot into our time on Capri, first we had the artisan tour (where I got to keep a custom-made pair of sandals), then we had a romantic sunset cruise aboard our own private gozzo. We're off to Ischia tomorrow, known for its volcanic geography. A tour of La Mortella Gardens, created in the 50s by Lady Susana Walton, is on the cards accompanied by an expert biologist.

After our tour of the gardens yesterday, an afternoon in the hotel’s thermal pools was just what we needed to unwind a little. The waters are naturally warm thanks to the volcanic properties of the land they’re built on, and I stayed in there long after my fingers began to prune. It set me up for a breathtaking kayak tour around the island this morning, soon to be followed by our yacht trip to Procida island for an intimate dinner by the water.

I can now say I am among the few people to have stayed in a lighthouse – Punta Imperatore lighthouse to be exact. It’s where we spent our last night on Ischia before moving onto Naples, where we’ve toured the ruins of Roman baths (and scuba dived some underwater remains) and the historical streets of the city. From ancient castles to bustling squares, we were joined by an expert guide in the streets of the Spaccanapoli area for a traditional Neapolitan lunch – resulting in some new-found favourites, cuppetiello and sfogliatelle.
