Luxury touring holidays in Africa

  • Three lions rest on the ground while a group of people observe from a distance in a dry, sparse landscape.

It’s as though Mother Nature couldn’t decide which environs she loved most.

It’s as though Mother Nature couldn’t decide which environs she loved most.

A land of colour and contrasts. Deep red skies, dazzling white sands and clear blue waters; chic cities and thrilling safari encounters – Africa stirs the senses and the soul.

With the likes of Tanzania and Botswana’s wildlife stealing the show, most who venture to this part of the world are seen donning beige and binoculars. But, with over 50 countries to choose from, the diversity of this vibrant continent lies far beyond its fauna.

South Africa’s trump card isn’t in its safaris, but its winelands, tempting travelling twosomes to take a break from the vivacious cities in favour of a slower countryside pace. Off the coast, the archipelago of Zanzibar is somewhat of a surprise with its bohemian vibe and sugar-white sands, while the whole experience of the south does a complete 180 in Morocco, bringing a taste of Arabia to the table.

Africa’s contrasts
captivate

      Botswana & Zambia

      Beauty off the beaten track

Rich in biodiversity and iconic on the safari scene, adventuring in Botswana and Zambia would seem reward enough. Stray from the jeep, however, and the prize is unparalleled. Botswana’s aim is to keep footfall to a minimum, making for superior game viewing Those who venture here take it slower, heading out in a mokoro for a more immersive encounter within the delta, getting on eye level with the wildlife. While in Zambia, even the freshest of ramblers will get their kicks from heading out on foot. Better still, in wandering these less-trodden paths, there’s the delightful feeling of first discoveries.

    • A giraffe stands near a tree in a savanna during sunset, framed by silhouetted trees.
      Tanzania & Zanzibar

Safari to beach in a heartbeat

Top of the list for game viewing, life in Tanzania moves with the seasons. As the migration gets underway, visitors flock to the sprawled-out lodges to watch the wildebeest spill over rivers and swarm like ants across the Serengeti plains. It requires a ‘get up and go’ attitude, but even the most enthusiastic of naturalists need a break. That’s where the archipelago just off Tanzania’s coast comes in.  Subtle in its pride when it comes to its Maldives-rivalling sands and mellow pace, Zanzibar is the natural place to reflect and spend time together, either post-safari or simply as an Indian Ocean alternative.

    • Three elephants walk across a dusty plain with Mount Kilimanjaro in the background.
      Morocco & South Africa

      The polar opposites

Straddling the continent’s northern and southern coasts, these two countries are cultural melting pots. The ‘Rainbow Nation’ that earnt her stripes in a cacophony of languages, three buzzing cities, and everything from safaris to winelands in-between; South Africa’s colourful diversity is all too easy to fall for. To the north, Arabia’s mysticism and Africa’s vibrancy (with a touch of Mediterranean glamour) converge in Morocco. A sense of tradition weaves into every corner of life in its differing landscapes – from Marrakech’s souks buzzling to a backdrop of the Atlas Mountains, to the streets of Casablanca where Art Deco meets the old ways.

    • A baby gorilla clings to an adult gorilla while another adult watches in a lush green forest.
      Rwanda & Namibia

      Masterclasses in the multifaceted

Dense and misty jungles define one, while rippling sun-baked dunes define the other – both Rwanda and Namibia are A-star studies in the spellbinding diversity of Africa’s landscapes. By the coast where the Namib and Kalahari deserts collide, life secretly bubbles below the heated haze – from cave paintings harking to old civilisations to a surprising amount of fauna. While inland, one of Africa’s smallest countries packs a big punch – both in exclusivity and nature. Home to the continent’s first national park, Rwanda is roamed by primates so beloved and protected that only a select few visitors can enter their abode – gorillas.

Africa
Going beyond the grasslands

Because a safari is about more than just the Big Five

Wide-open savannahs – they’re the quintessential safari scene. But while the plains have their beloved leading line-up, stray from the dusty tracks and there are brand new ecosystems, and wildlife favourites, to discover. Breathing life into the arid landscapes, river cruises provide a perspective like no other safari can. Look one way and the scene is filled with antelope elegantly bending to drink, eyed closely by crocodiles in the shallows. Look the other way and statuesque water birds are glimpsed before the heaving bodies of wallowing hippos disturb the peace.

A stark contrast to the grasslands, the dense forests of Rwanda require a little more perseverance, but the rewards are worth it. Warthogs snuffle in the leaflitter and primates like Golden monkeys and chimpanzees swing from branch to branch, while a micro-world of colourful insects and amphibians goes about its daily business. The best prize of all, though, can be spotted high on the hillside – a troop of mountain gorillas. But superstars can’t be limited to terra firma, so as the land has its famous quintet, so does the ocean – known as the Marine Big Five. On South Africa’s coastline, Cape fur seals squeeze themselves onto beaches, and the sight of African penguins may surprise some safari goers. Meanwhile, taking to the water brings playful Bottlenose dolphins, brooding Great White sharks and gentle Southern Right whales closer than any jeep ride could.
