Cape Town – Antarctica – Franschhoek

A short cut to the
great 'White Desert'

A snowy curveball in the middle of a classic pairing, Antarctica is a surprisingly welcome disruption to the city-born fervour and oenophile antics of a Cape Town and Franschhoek tour.

Stepping out into the icy air on Wolf Fang’s runway, it’s hard to believe that the frigid snowscapes of the Great White South are just a private jet flight away from the heat of Cape Town. But that’s the beauty of this White Desert trip, in as little time as it would take to get to Dubai, you’re in a place only a few lucky travellers get to lay eyes on. Living up to its reputation, adventure abounds here, and in just a few hours, moments that will last a lifetime are made.

The adventurous side of this trip sees explorers make their way below the waves of ice to be enveloped in the ethereal blue glow of the caves, with the true daredevils then abseiling down a frozen cliff face. A more mellow pace takes hold after a Champagne picnic, before it’s time to bask in the (sometimes literally) breathtaking surroundings with drinks in an igloo or movie in the ice cinema. Suddenly, the allure of Franschhoek’s lush winelands seems to melt away.

Extraordinary
experiences

    • Person abseiling down a steep, textured ice wall in Antarctica under bright, clear conditions.
Explore the depths of shimmering Antarctic ice caves and abseil a frozen cliff

A moment you’ll want to relive over and over again, wander through the otherworldly corridors of Antarctica’s ice caves with an expert guide. So, no one is left out, the experience can be as laid-back as you like, but for true adrenaline junkies, the chance to then abseil from a frozen cliff is not to be passed up.

    • A group of hikers atop an icy glacier under a clear sky.
Sip Champagne and dine in a Bedouin tent in the great White Desert

Following a guided walk to a panoramic viewpoint, a Champagne picnic is a welcome reward – set against Antarctica’s vast, pristine landscape, no less. Take in the spectacular views before coming together for a lunch of delectable breads and charcuterie with drinks cooled with 10,000-year-old ice from the glacier itself.

    • Bartender preparing a drink inside an atmospheric ice bar with bottles displayed along carved snow shelves.
      Raise a glacial toast

Where better to toast to the trip of a lifetime than the Wolf's Fang Ice Bar, carved entirely from the area's natural ice. Sip your cocktail of choice, served, of course, over 10,000-year-old glacier ice. It's perhaps the most unique tipple you'll ever experience.

    • A group of people tapping wine glasses together in celebration
Winelands walk with storyteller and prominent winemaker, Harry Melck

An 8th generation descendant of the well-known Cape "wine" family, Harry’s go-to knowledge on the wine industry makes for a fascinating tour filled with fun. Hear about all the ways the industry has evolved over time, with everything from farming methods and techniques to identifying wine with your eyes closed.

    • Wildflowers and coastal vegetation in golden light with a mountain range and ocean views in the distance.
Fly to the Misty Cliffs to tour the fynbos ecoregion before enjoying a picnic

Excitement grows with every turn of the helicopter blades as you prepare to take flight over the dramatic Cape Point. But instead of a fleeting bird’s eye view, after rounding the peninsula, the helicopter lands in the colourful blanket of the fynbos belt of the Western Cape. After an enlightening tour of this unique spot, settle down with a glass of wine to savour a gourmet picnic with unbeatable views.

    • Dog sitting in a pink sidecar motorcycle parked on a dirt road with mountains and greenery in the background.
Zip around Cape Town in a chauffeured vintage sidecar

In the same iconic pink hue as Belmond Mount Nelson itself, the mode of transport for this tour is just as aesthetic as the landscape its driving through. With tours taking in the scenic Chapman’s Peak Drive, heading west to the beaches of Bloubergstrand, or option to completely customise the route, camera rolls are guaranteed to fill up fast.
