Japan

From its privileged position along the banks of the Kamogawa River, inspiration taken from traditional Ryokans ensures Ritz-Carlton’s Kyoto outpost ticks every box when it comes to having it all.

A backdrop of the Higashiyama District’s mountains sets the peaceful tone on the way to The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto. It’s a relaxing way to begin a stay here, especially considering its ideal yet bustling location close to the Pontocho and Gion areas. Inside, a tranquil atmosphere dominates; staff leave guests wanting for nothing from the get-go, seamlessly guiding new arrivals to spacious rooms that put a modern twist on old-school Japanese décor. With the really lucky ones opening the door to one of the two suites that have their own zen gardens.

Communal areas are just as heavily influenced by the customary hot spring inns. Outside has been brought in with the likes of a natural water feature entrance, floor-to-ceiling windows that look out onto rock gardens and waterfalls, and bonsais is almost every corner. When it comes to dining, tradition reigns, especially in Mizuki where a thoughtfully curated Kaiseki menu blends authentic techniques with modern flavours. And while there may not actually be any onsens here, the spa more than makes up for it with a signature treatment – the Ryokucha Serentiy Ritual – utilising the power of green tea, and a 20-metre swimming pool that doesn’t require a tentative toe dip before entering.
