Luxury Japan holidays

  • The view from Chureito Pagoda in Fujiyoshida looking down to the city and the snow-capped Mount Fuji beyond

A country that lives for both the past and future, shaped by the changing seasons and the spirits of nature; in Japan, there’s a completely unique adventure to be had with each rising of the sun.

A country that lives for both the past and future, shaped by the changing seasons and the spirits of nature; in Japan, there’s a completely unique adventure to be had with each rising of the sun.

Look around and there’s no shortage of Japanese influences – in supermarkets, on television, those everyday gadgets. Even the neon glow of Tokyo has become instantly recognisable as a concrete jungle in an eternal rush hour. And yet, these familiarities don’t even scratch the surface of this archipelagic nation. But, for those wanderers that scratch hard enough, a surefire win is afoot.

Within its bountiful confines, tech-centric cities are flipped on their heads faster than a bullet train, revealing how modern life is swayed by ancient tradition. Enigmatic Geisha culture reigns in Kyoto and some of the best castles can be found in and around Osaka. Even the capital’s skyscrapers can’t dwarf the significance of its temples and market culture. For every reverent bow though, the past won’t define everywhere – namely in Hiroshima, where daydream-worthy fare and flourishing gardens embrace a bright and peaceful future.

In pursuit of…
… food for the soul

A long pathway stretching through a tall green bamboo forest in Kyoto with a person standing in the distance

Indulge on artfully crafted sushi or soothing ramen and you’ll be satisfied for hours, indulge in Japan’s connection with nature and you’ll be fulfilled for life. Belief in the likes of Kami (ancestral and natural spirits from the Shinto religion) and 72 micro-seasons have instilled a deep-rooted respect for all living things, shaping daily life and manifesting in the plethora of festivals and shrines that define this land. From cherry-blossom beauty to forest-bathing mindfulness, if anywhere can make anyone a believer in the power of Mother Nature, it’s here.

Kazuo Ishiguro, novelist and screenwriter
“If you go to Tokyo, I think it becomes very obvious that there’s this almost seamless mixture of popular culture and Japanese traditional culture.”

A sense of place

Get to know our favourite spots in Japan, from the globally recognised sights of Tokyo’s bustling streets to the tranquillity that pervades the central west coast.

  • A busy street full of neon signs in Tokyo
    Tokyo Region

Full of heritage highlights and futuristic delights, just to explore the must-see sights of the largest city in the world could take an entire trip. Having said that, it’s worth taking the time to venture further afield to the likes of temple-and-shrine-studded Nikko to the north and the pretty landscapes of coastal Kamakura.

  • A traditional Japanese geisha carrying a red umbrella walking through the streets of Kyoto
    Kyoto Region

As expected from the birthplace of Geisha culture, Kyoto is beguilingly spiritual and beautifully traditional. Its sister city Osaka, however, takes a more casual approach, with theme parks for the families and amazing nightlife for the grown-ups. And caught in the middle is sweet Nara, where tame deer and pilgrims on sacred paths roam the mountains.

  • A view of the Hakone-jinja shrine in front of lush greenery across the lake
    Central East

Between Tokyo and Kyoto and in the shadow of Mount Fuji, Hakone and the Izu Peninsula are bursting with natural beauty, from hot springs to cave-speckled beaches. While Iga (the birthplace of the shinobi) and the country’s most sacred Shinto shrine are the highlights of the Mie Prefecture.

  • A person in a traditional Japanese straw hat gardening beneath trees
    Central West

Hot on the heels of Kyoto’s traditions, Kanazawa’s Edo-period gems come with far less crowds, plentiful seafood and one of Japan’s best gardens. Heritage continues in Yamashiro Onsen, a town in Kaga known for its hot springs, and in Takayama – a city of artisans in the mountains with a beautifully preserved old town.

  • The Itsukushima Jinja in Hiroshima complete with ornate lanterns, lion statues and traditional Japanese red and black architecture
    Setouchi Region

Comprised of seven prefectures surrounding the Seto Inland Sea, life here has been shaped by the water. There are so many islands and bays to explore, but the likes of artsy Naoshima with its museums, historic Hiroshima’s thriving foodie scene, and Miyajima Island’s famous shrine demand extra attention.

Experiences

    • A person practicing traditional Japanese caligraphy
Learn the art of Japanese calligraphy

In the intimate setting of a private school, sit alongside locals to learn and practice the traditional art of calligraphy. Known as ‘Shodo’ in Japanese, discover how the different shades of ink and brush strokes come together to draw a ‘kanji’ – the Chinese character that Japanese writing is based on.

    • Two women in traditional geisha attire and makeup walking through the streets of Kyoto with red umbrellas
Experience a private dinner and Geisha performance

Whether in a historical tea house or exclusive restaurant, sit down to a private Kaiseki dinner hosted by Japan’s most famous entertainers – Geisha. Chat to the Geisha about their schooling in the arts of song and dance before a local musician joins them on stage for an after-dinner show.

    • Get to know the locals at the famous ‘Deer Park’

Head out of Kyoto on a day trip to historical Nara, the ancient capital of Japan. Starting your day with a visit to Nara Park, known commonly as ‘Deer Park’ due to its population of hundreds of freely roaming deer. Head on to the Kasugataisha Shrine and Tōdai-ji temple for a taste of Nara’s history and spirituality.

    • A sculpture featuring a white head adorned with greenery in a fountain
Discover the best bits of Hakone

It may be known for its onsens, but there’s much more to this volcanic national park. Ride the popular Ropeway to Owakudani Valley to see its hot springs and rivers before a private cruise on Lake Ashi. Later, head to the Open Air Museum where sculptures fill the gardens, and indoor galleries host world-famous artworks.

    • Pink neon lights and interior of a shop in the Harajuku district of Tokyo
      Explore Tokyo’s bustling Harajuku district

Bursting with boutiques and foodie spots, the Harajuku district is beloved by Tokyo’s teens and the trend conscious. The abundance of unique fashion is definitely a highlight, but sweet tooths really have it good here with the endless choice of confectionary shops.

    • One for the Studio Ghibli fans

Perhaps Japan’s most famous animated exports, the films of Studio Ghibli have long delighted fans (of all ages) across the globe. Designed by the iconic animator Hayao Miyazaki, at the Ghibli Museum, you’re greeted by familiar faces such as Totoro as you discover the fine art behind these family favourites. The museum’s motto may be ‘let’s lose our way together’, but make sure to book in advance.
