  • Red winter barn in between snowy trees

A silent, pristine wilderness of enchanting forests, frozen lakes, an abundance of inquisitive fauna and otherworldly places to rest sleepy heads, Swedish Lapland is the place to walk on the wild side.

A silent, pristine wilderness of enchanting forests, frozen lakes, an abundance of inquisitive fauna and otherworldly places to rest sleepy heads, Swedish Lapland is the place to walk on the wild side.

While the families are in search of Santa in the Finnish bounds of Lapland, the grown-ups are found out and about in the vast openness of the Swedish segment. The experiences to be had in this Arctic landscape may be on everyone’s bucket lists, but you can hardly blame them – not a single person can fail to find them magical. From husky sledding and exploring the forest around Jukkasjärvi on a snowmobile led tour with a local, to perhaps the most memorable of all, catching a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis.

There are some slightly more niche pursuits though; time your visit to coincide with the season of midnight light and you can bask in the nocturnal sun, while others to add to the list come in the form of forest saunas, sea kayaking on the Lule River and fat biking.

Sweden, Treehotel, 7th Room Exterior in Winter
… where sleep is an experience in itself

A landscape this captivating calls for accommodation that can keep up. There’s the iconic ICEHOTEL, an all-ice creation that’d make the Snow Queen herself envious, chiselled afresh each year with sculptures changing from suite to suite. Including a room kept cold 365 days a year for a winter wonderland experience in the summer heat. And just 50km from the Arctic Circle lies Harads, home of the Treehotel, where guests sleep in the woods aboard a UFO, inside a bird’s nest, within a camouflaged mirrorcube or at the heart of a biosphere that attracts the wildlife straight to the window.

While the families are in search of Santa in the Finnish bounds of Lapland, the grown-ups are found out and about in the vat openness of the Swedish segment.
