Exuding a relaxed and cosy atmosphere, the intimate charm of The Capra blends classic Swiss style with contemporary luxuries in the snow-sure Saas-Fee resort.
One of the largest wooden hotels in the whole of Europe, outwardly, Buff Medical Resort takes its cues from nature – utilising Swiss pine and lying low in the tree line on the banks of peaceful Lake Constance. Inside, however, tells a different story; one that balances modern minimalism with a touch of futuristic wonder. It’s reassuringly unfussy, but unlike other retreats in the medical sphere, it’s a world away from clinical.
Managed by a father-son duo who have assembled a crack team of physicians and wellness experts, the intention here is to help guests on their health journeys without delay, doing so within a welcoming atmosphere and genuine feeling of care from the moment the lobby doors open. As a byproduct, it makes the experience comfortable enough to go it alone, which is exactly how a trip here is best done – allowing for a completely private and uninterrupted experience.
In the name of full immersion and removal of the artificial, there are some common conveniences that have been limited; wi-fi is turned off from 10pm to 6am, meals are encouraged to be taken alone to help focus on chewing rather than chit chat, you won’t find any coffee or alcohol on the premises, nor any lotions and potions in the rooms,
and there’s certainly no ordering food from outside the resort. It’s far from intimidating though, there’s a warm feeling throughout, with smiling staff and amiable practitioners who all function like a well-oiled machine. And as for other guests, they’re more than happy to share their experiences at the resort, maybe even inspiring another visit in the future.
With a specialist medical team at the ready from doctors and cardiologists to nutritionists and osteopaths, pretty much every pillar of health and wellness is covered. Ranging from three to 21 nights, curated diagnostics-led programmes include the likes of detoxes, mental health management and even specialist retreats for athletes. The aim is to have guests leave feeling like the best versions of themselves, but as we all know, you are what you eat, so one of the core focus areas is always diet. In the peaceful dining room, two menus are available – Longevity Cuisine and FX Mayr. The former is for the ones who love their food, featuring perfectly crafted nutritious dishes but casting all notions of fasting to the wind. The latter, however, is the resort’s speciality – prioritising detoxification and recovery of the gut and overseen by the resort’s Medical Director Dr. Claas Hohmann.
From heart concerns to sports diagnostics, the technology at Buff Medical Resort is so high-end some of it surpasses even university-level equipment, allowing for the most accurate and in-depth analysis. Think 3D body scanners to help improve posture, fitness and function; blood testing gear; adjustable physician-directed altitude climate built into rooms to support cellular and mitochondrial health (a speciality of the resort); and of course, state-of-the-art gym equipment and beauty treatments. Perhaps most impressively, their cardiac imaging (led by leading expert Prof. Dr. Henning Steen) works with one of the most advanced MRI machines in the world and one of only four in Europe – sometimes catching issues before they even become apparent.
No matter whether guests go with a health concern in mind or just to reset their lifestyle, everyone benefits from Buff’s detailed gait analysis. Often used by runners to help them asses the best shoes to train in, this procedure can actually have a great positive impact on day-to-day life by helping to identify walking patterns to improve posture and reduce injury. In addition, the resort has a cutting-edge custom insole machine, meaning guests can leave knowing that they can continue to improve their bodies long after they’ve returned home.
