With a Michelin star under its belt and a ‘Best Sommelier in Austria’ under its roof, delivering good food is just as important as a good time slopeside at this sky-skimming hotel in one of Austria’s highest skiing spots.

With a Michelin star under its belt and a ‘Best Sommelier in Austria’ under its roof, delivering good food is just as important as a good time slopeside at this sky-skimming hotel in one of Austria’s highest skiing spots.

The name Gourmet and Wine Hotel Austria would seemingly speak for itself, but really, it doesn’t quite scratch the surface of what graces the tables at this four-star superior foodie haven; an attention to detail that can only be found at family-owned boutiques is at play here, alongside an ethos to open guests’ minds, hearts and palates to new tastes. An intimate affair, the 16-seat Michelin-starred restaurant – Austria Stuben – is where speciality breakfasts melt into evening fine-dining feasts that are just as fulfilling as hearty Alpine cuisine. Inspired by fare both near and far, dishes are enhanced by the pairings meticulously chosen by sommelier Maximilian Steiner – who also leads tastings in the wine cellar throughout the week. He also leads the surprise tastings offered before or after dinner, where delectable food and beverage morsels can be explored, from far-flung flavours to more regional delicacies.

In the time between meals, guests are reminded of the adventures that lie outside the kitchen. Elevated 1,930 metres above sea level in Obergurgl, a combined 112 kilometres of snow-sure slopes are brought practically to the doorstep thanks to the ski-in, ski-out nature of the hotel. Don’t expect a big après scene, instead, it’s more about having fun on the pistes and retreating to the 1,200-metre spa to soak in the steam bath and heated pools (or for the lucky ones, to their own private sauna in their room) to recover, ready to do it all again tomorrow.
