With twenty six storeys and a design inspired by the shape of a breaking wave, the iconic Jumeirah Beach Hotel is a striking Dubai landmark.
The brainchild of Shaun Killa (the designer behind many of Dubai’s icons) Jumeriah Marsa Al Arab was destined to be an architectural hit. Bold and beautiful, the inspiration came from the sleek silhouette of a superyacht, complimenting Jumeirah Burj Al Arab’s sailboat and Beach Hotel’s wave shapes, and in true Jumeriah style, every detail has been considered to enhance the experience.
Its defining feature – a futuristic arrival archway – begins the design journey with a fountain centrepiece and views of the Jumeirah Burj Al Arab, and the welcome ambient temperature is partly thanks to the self-shading design of the wrap-around balconies. And no, the staff aren’t magic, they just have their own dedicated spaces out of sight to keep things running smoothly and seamlessly behind the scenes.
Indicative of its plum position on the tip of one of the city’s most exclusive private beachfronts, peak at anyone through the warming tint of designer shades around any of the five pools and you’re bound to land on a discerning and stylish traveller.
This is where half of the jet set come to play and the other half long to be; lounging on the plush amber sunbeds and sipping on a pre-treatment hibiscus tea wrapped in the warmth of the three-storey spa and fitness centre.
In true Jumeirah fashion, foodies are in seventh heaven when it comes to the hotel’s diverse dining. A total of 11 restaurants encompass the globe, each with décor so sumptuous it rivals the food itself, and the four bars range from chilled afternoon tipples to dancing into the early hours. Dining isn’t limited to this Jumeriah outpost either, with Marsa Al Arab’s sister properties opening their doors to bring the total number of restaurant options to over 80 – 20 of which are listed in the Gault & Millau and Michelin guides.
While not strictly ‘in resort’, the shiny new private marina on the hotel’s doorstep is the place to be seen. It’s the springboard for all things nautical, including hiring one of Jumeirah’s private yachts. Then there’s the boardwalk, who’s lively atmosphere around its shops and restaurants lets unsure sea legs experience the yachting lifestyle while staying firmly on land. And with half of the suites having the marina in their sights, it’s easy to keep an eye on what’s going on.
Perfectly positioned to explore the rest of the portfolio, we’d recommend taking a day or two for a Jumeriah grand tour. Spend a day wandering the souks and waterfront of Madinat – Jumeriah’s mini-city – before indulging in afternoon at new heights in the Jumeirah Burj Al Arab. And if little ones are in tow, a day at the iconic Wild Wadi Waterpark is a surefire way of ensuring they’ll sleep well that night.
