Dots of thatch burst from a blanket of swaying palms at this village-like resort on the northern coast of Hawaii’s Big Island. Casually scattered as if to reflect its homeland’s laid-back character, these Hawaiian hale-inspired rooms stand on ebony rocks that have seen a lot of change over the years. Once occupied by the prehistoric creators of the nearby petroglyph field and Polynesian settlers afterwards, the 1960s saw the first iteration of what would become Kona Village, A Rosewood Resort.

This former fishing village holds true to its roots while staying very much in the here and now;
balancing the likes of a food market and farm with stylish restaurants, a modern spa and gym with an archaeological site, and heritage water sports with impeccable service at pools and beach. But for all of its temptations keeping guests in tune with both the island and themselves, it’s also a great base to strike out to explore The Big Island’s central regions for a day or two.

Although it’s on the secluded side, Kona Village has mastered cultural immersion. The two delectable dining venues put a Hawaiian spin on classic dishes and fresh seafood features heavily, while communal pūlehu nights combine live music with chargrilled flavours. For a tipple there are three spots, including feet-in-the-sand Shipwreck Bar made from the former resort owner’s schooner. Cooking classes feature on the resort’s activity list too, but that’s of course not the end of it. Lei making, ukelele lessons, petroglyph tours, snorkelling and sunrise paddles aboard an outrigger boat make their way in the schedules of most who venture here.

Rising from the lava flow, the Asaya Spa centres its healing therapies around traditional Hawaiian techniques performed in indoor and outdoor treatment rooms to views of Hualalai volcano from afar. It’s easy to lose a day hopping around the thermal circuit, but don’t fret if your sunlight hours are taken up by the resort’s extensive activity offering – the special Mahina Renewal Ritual offers after-hours spa time by moonlight.
