In the months where leaves give in to gravity and the whisper of a chill drifts through the trees, you’ll find some wasting no time in chasing warmer climes one last time, while the enchantment of the changing tones has others seeking Mother Nature’s best displays.

The former are out to make the most of the weather, rounding up the extended family and making haste for the glistening shores of Antigua, Dubai and Mauritius, or the closer-to-home alternatives of the Amalfi and Moroccan coasts. Then there’s California, whose road trips bridge the gap between beaches and adventure.
The latter, however, embrace the shift and the flood of colour that comes with it; from vivid vegetation to festooned streets that define seasonal celebrations. It’s during autumn when the calm waters surrounding the Seychelles fill with migrating marine life and Japan is a sea of scarlet and gold – a spectacle just as swoon-worthy as its cherry blossoms. Central Park also turns over a colourful new leaf as New York welcomes the festivities of the fall; while over in India, the lights of Diwali that brighten the darkest of skies mirror the constellations visible from Tenerife’s shores.

Seasonal secrets

Japan’s springtime blooms are famous, but the jetsetters that head to the country during autumn (or ‘Aki’) are met with forests of crimson and gold. Known in Japanese as ‘koyo’, the colour of the autumn leaves depends on the type of tree: ginkgo trees turn yellow and Japanese maple turn either rich red or vibrant orange.

Witnessing the Great Migration is on the bucket list for many, from safari aficionados to casual observers, but its popularity means many game drives are spent dodging other jeeps. Head to the Serengeti in late autumn, though, and there’s still the chance to catch the tail end (pun intended) of the spectacle – but without the crowds.

As the summer crowds start to dwindle, Indonesia’s wildlife starts to emerge. Sailing the waters that surround the Komodo Islands means reaping rewards beyond blissful days at sea. On land, female Komodo dragons begin to dig their nests, while underwater, manta rays and whales arrive in droves, making this the best season for diving.

As the days start to shorten and the air gets a little crisper, many of us start to think of escaping to warmer climes one last time. That’s when October half term comes in handy. Some destinations, like the Canary Islands, the Algarve and parts of Greece, stay warm and sunny way into the later months, and their short-haul status makes them the perfect options for one last week of Vitamin D.
