Where to travel in autumn 2026

In the months where leaves give in to gravity and the whisper of a chill drifts through the trees, you’ll find some wasting no time in chasing warmer climes one last time, while the enchantment of the changing tones has others seeking Mother Nature’s best displays.

September - November

In the months where leaves give in to gravity and the whisper of a chill drifts through the trees, you’ll find some wasting no time in chasing warmer climes one last time, while the enchantment of the changing tones has others seeking Mother Nature’s best displays.

The former are out to make the most of the weather, rounding up the extended family and making haste for the glistening shores of Antigua, Dubai and Mauritius, or the closer-to-home alternatives of the Amalfi and Moroccan coasts. Then there’s California, whose road trips bridge the gap between beaches and adventure.

The latter, however, embrace the shift and the flood of colour that comes with it; from vivid vegetation to festooned streets that define seasonal celebrations. It’s during autumn when the calm waters surrounding the Seychelles fill with migrating marine life and Japan is a sea of scarlet and gold – a spectacle just as swoon-worthy as its cherry blossoms. Central Park also turns over a colourful new leaf as New York welcomes the festivities of the fall; while over in India, the lights of Diwali that brighten the darkest of skies mirror the constellations visible from Tenerife’s shores.

Expert tips and overlooked alternatives
Seasonal secrets

Tree branches with vibrant autumn leaves in shades of red and orange against a natural green backdrop.
Autumnal awe

Japan’s springtime blooms are famous, but the jetsetters that  head to the country during autumn (or ‘Aki’) are met with forests of crimson and gold. Known in Japanese as ‘koyo’, the colour of the autumn leaves depends on the type of tree: ginkgo trees turn yellow and Japanese maple turn either rich red or vibrant orange.

Large herd of wildebeest grazing on dry grassland during sunset in the African savannah.
Last-minute migration magic

Witnessing the Great Migration is on the bucket list for many, from safari aficionados to casual observers, but its popularity means many game drives are spent dodging other jeeps. Head to the Serengeti in late autumn, though, and there’s still the chance to catch the tail end (pun intended) of the spectacle – but without the crowds.

Diving and dragons

As the summer crowds start to dwindle, Indonesia’s wildlife starts to emerge. Sailing the waters that surround the Komodo Islands means reaping rewards beyond blissful days at sea. On land, female Komodo dragons begin to dig their nests, while underwater, manta rays and whales arrive in droves, making this the best season for diving.

Family matters

As the days start to shorten and the air gets a little crisper, many of us start to think of escaping to warmer climes one last time. That’s when October half term comes in handy. Some destinations, like the Canary Islands, the Algarve and parts of Greece, stay warm and sunny way into the later months, and their short-haul status makes them the perfect options for one last week of Vitamin D.

Insights for the curious traveller

    • Snow-capped mountain peaks glowing with warm sunset light under a dramatic sky in the Dolomites.
      Photo op

A phenomenon known as ‘enrosadira’, the famous yet rare pink peaks of the Dolomites are at their most vibrant during the autumn months. In reality, these blush and coral hues are created thanks to angles and the sun’s rays – but according to myth, they are all that remain of an elf king’s rose garden, only visible at dawn and dusk. So it’s best to keep the camera close to hand.

    • Couple standing on a Regent Seven Seas cruise ship deck overlooking the ocean at sunset with modern radar dome in the background.
      An alternative arrangement

It’s no secret that, as a great ‘shoulder season’ for some late summer sun, autumn is popular with globetrotters looking to avoid the crowds. But what those in the know don’t wax lyrical about is how this time of year is perfect for setting sail on a cruise. From the glittering Mediterranean to Japan’s coastal wonders, an autumn cruise ticks off not only some last-minute sun but plenty of destinations too.

    • Scenic view of Mount Otemanu in Bora Bora with turquoise lagoon, overwater bungalows, and lush tropical greenery at sunset.
      Editor's picks

More far flung but worth the long haul, the tropical paradises of Fiji and French Polynesia are working their way back onto discerning traveller’s wanderlust wishlists. With the dry season lasting until October and all the summer visitors reluctantly back at home, we think the early to mid-autumn months are the perfect time to visit when it comes to both weather and wallets.
