Where to travel in summer 2026

June - August

Little ones may or may not be in tow, but that ‘school’s out for summer’ feeling never truly leaves you, no matter how many years it’s been.

Nostalgia sets the bar higher every year – to find the best adults-only spaces amid a sea of family fun; or to set the scene for magical childhood memories your youngsters will recall fondly for a lifetime. To us, summer holidays are an artform, and these are the ones that most certainly live up to the hype.

It’ll be no surprise that beaches beckon both near and far – the Mediterranean and Caribbean naturally leading the lineup for a quintessential holiday, with hospitality as warm as the sun-soaked relaxation calling from their coastlines. Yet for all its unfailing idylls, this season too lends itself to swimming against the tide, looking beyond the beach toward the appeal of adventure. For families with teens, six weeks of opportunity stretch ahead, ready to be filled with the sights and sounds of safari, an American trip inspired by the big screen, or the blessings of Bali before our all-of-a-sudden adults f ly the nest. And though the more mature among us have the luxury of holidaying whenever we please, we’d recommend basking in the breathtaking landscapes of Canada, New Zealand and even the Arctic, only when they’re looking their best.

Expert tips and overlooked alternatives
Seasonal secrets

A view of a village in the Swiss Alps in summer
See ski destinations in a new light

The rush of sailing down the slopes may be reserved for the winter months, but when a blanket of white becomes vibrant green, the scenery of our once winter wonderlands is just as spellbinding. Swap skis for hiking boots to make the most of the Swiss Alps and Montana’s Rocky Mountains when most have turned the other way.

Steer clear of the crowds

Popular destinations near or far need to be timed just right. Croatia may be abuzz with sightseers all summer, though we find its famed scenery most appealing in the anticipatory calm of early June. Indonesia, too, is a destination to visit early in the season, with the weather on your side as spring showers begin to subside back home.

Family matters

Weeks on end outside the classroom leave ample room to tick long-haul destinations off the bucket list. Naturally, the Caribbean and Indian Ocean sit tied at the top of ours, bringing tropical beachfront bliss with a splash of water sports, and first-rate food spots to satisfy even the fussiest of eaters.

Insights for the curious traveller

    • A man on the deck of an arctic cruise looking through a telescope
      Photo op

Far from the city that never sleeps, Arctic cruises see much more than the Northern Lights when the summer months roll around. Wall-to-wall sunshine may sound strange in the coldest reaches of our planet, though the novelty of the midnight sun never quite seems to fade. Celebrate this slightly disorientating phenomenon, photographing the icy landscape as  the clock ticks into a new day.

    • A woman reading on a riverside terrace at Lolebezi Zambia
      An alternative arrangement

A northern neighbour to ever-popular Botswana, Zambia is the up-and-coming underdog of the safari world. Swapping the Okavango Delta for the home of the African walking safari, the search for wildlife here tracks from The Valley of the Leopards to the thunder of Victoria Falls, on two feet, four wheels and with the ebb and flow of the Zambezi River.

    • A private yacht charter sailing between rocky green shores on the Mediterranean
      Editor's picks

The epitome of glamour, charting a private yacht is synonymous with the Mediterranean in more than simply the destination. Collaborating with your captain for an exclusive itinerary precedes slow sailing on sun-warmed waters to your own schedule, choosing to stay a few extra days by Greek islands, or adding a stop by Montenegro’s Bay of Kotor on route to the storied Croatian coastlines. The choice, quite simply, is yours.
