Laying eyes on a specific painting in a world-famous gallery; walking through streets described by a favourite author; witnessing the skill of a local artisan in action – art-inspired travel is as personal as each interpretation. But whatever medium pulls at the heartstrings, exploring a destination’s museums, workshops and inspirational hotspots can really pull back the cultural curtain.  

From Spanish greats like Gaudi and Picasso to Italy’s iconic Renaissance aesthetics, the homes of many a masterpiece are right on our doorstep in Europe. Hopping around the continent is an easy way to test the waters when it comes to luxury travel itineraries, mainly because of their short-haul nature and ability to cater to families. But it also provides a deeper look into the destinations we think we already know. Like on a Mediterranean tour that encourages a hands-on approach to pottery in Athens, statue sculpting in Florence and watercolours in Venice’s Cannaregio district.  

Likewise, Japan’s rise in popularity has seen even more of an interest in its artforms than there already was. With a particular gift for making even broken things look beautiful, the craftsmanship to come out of this ancient nation has influenced artists across the world. While others take their hundredth photo of Mount Fuji or dip in and out of sushi spots, exploring the country’s artsy side through classes and workshops led by experts paints a picture of Japan outside the tourist frame; from learning the therapeutic art of Bonsai to appreciating the gilded cracks of kintsugi ceramics that teach us flaws can make something unique and wonderful. 

Traditions that define a place

Just as creative arts have been nurtured throughout history, so too have the cultural traditions that root themselves deep. From the tea ceremonies in Sri Lanka and traditional Vietnamese junks that now serve as floating hotels, to the in-depth understanding of local flora known only to the tribal foragers in Kenya’s Maasai Mara; gaining a deeper understanding of these customs is what nurtures a personal connection to a world outside of our own. But while books, documentaries and podcasts do a great job of introducing them, nothing is more immersive than travel – especially multi-centre itineraries.

It’s seeing and taking part in these local rituals and meeting the people keeping them alive that makes a trip more meaningful and enriching. And doing so in an extended experience-rich trip is more rewarding than years of holidays combined. The world will always seem wide, but when time is taken to experience precious culture-rich activities, big adventures will seem a lot more intimate.
