Corfu / Angsana Corfu

Bringing the sleek design and upscale talents of its Asia-dwelling siblings, this newcomer overlooking Benitses Bay has become the new queen bee of Corfu’s popular crowd.

Blazing onto the scene with the largest spa and gym on the island and winning three awards before it even turned one-year-old, Angsana proved they didn’t come to the Ionian Coast to play games. The brand’s first resort to cross European borders, it’s got the looks – with a design that marries the aesthetics of high-end cruise ships with artistic touches like the reception’s sand dune-inspired sculpture; and the substance – by making sure to get the best seat in the house when it comes to space both in-resort and easy around-the-island access for the eager explorers.

Travel notes:

  • 159 rooms; 37 private pool villas
  • Altogether there’s 4 restaurants and 7 bars including a private dining option on the deck
  • The private pebble and sand beach is easy to access and has sunbeds, a beach bar and taverna
  • Vertigo, a new rooftop bar is coming in 2022
  • The hotel is committed to protecting the environment and uplifting the communities around it by making a donation from each stay to its Green Imperative Fund

A sense of place

The location more-or-less in Corfu’s heart means nowhere is too far to drive and Benitses’ beachfront shops are just down the hill. But with its numerous wellness treats, pretty pool areas (the infinity pool centrepiece is the largest on Corfu) and scrumptious foodie options there’s plenty here to entertain. The well-being choices may fool you into thinking this is a retreat for the body, but it’s very much the place to just unwind all year round. For every yogi there’s a mojito-drinker, for every massage given there’s an indulgent dessert crafted at A Lounge, and for every hiker that takes to the three walking trails there’s a beach-lingerer who hasn’t moved for an hour.

In pursuit of…

…the truest form of “Philoxenia”. Meaning “friend to a stranger”, the Greek’s are well known for taking their hospitality concept very seriously, so combine that with Angsana’s Far Eastern friendliness and you’ve got somewhere that feels like coming home. Considering it’s so new, there’s a cosy and welcoming feel that accompanies all of the high-end style and facilities of this internationally-recognised brand. With staff eager to help and make anyone, whether brand devotees or soon-to-be-besotted-newbies, feel like they belong.

Beyond family-friendly

Thinking outside the kids’ club box, Angsana encourages travelling troops to get out and about. The Rangers’ Club of course has all the bells and whistles: a dedicated pool, educators and entertainers, and a lengthy list of kid-approved activities. However, it’s the family time that makes a trip. An excursion to Bioporos Organic Farm introduces charming animals before a homemade lunch, a stable in an ethereal forest clearing reveals once endangered Skyrian ponies to ride, and budding archaeologists unearth ancient artifacts at Garitsa’s museum.

On location

Owned by Banyan Tree, it’ll come as no surprise that wellness is apparent throughout; from the health-conscious restaurant menus to the hotel’s crowning glory – the humongous spa. Equipped with all of the muscle-melting treatments that define the Far East, each therapist has been trained at the brand’s academy in Phuket to hone their skills, with Mediterranean treatments being added into the mix paying homage to the location. Each treatment is started with a bespoke assessment based on eight pillars of wellness before withdrawing to one of the 11 rooms.

Wake up here

Perched on the cliff edge for optimum panoramas with rooms snaking down toward the water, lovers of a far-reaching sea view are spoilt for choice, so the only thing to consider is how many people are travelling. Pairs suit the one-bedroom pool suite (again, said to be Corfu’s biggest in double room terms) where they fawn over the polished Japanese interiors and steal candid moments within the privacy of the garden-sheltered terrace. That, or they upgrade to their own villa like those the families go for, where a homely Corfu atmosphere is captured under terracotta roofs.

A Carrier curation

A sand dune safari isn’t the first thing to spring to mind when thinking of things to do here, but ask Angsana and they’ll gush about it. As the only Greek island to boast them, hop in a jeep or ride horseback to explore the heaped sands surrounding Korission Lake and all of the biodiversity that resides there. Hugged by Issos Beach and the Cedar Forest, the “Sahara of Corfu” has some surprising residents, including a flamboyance of flamingos. Later, a Corfiot farm is the location for lunch surrounded by the produce growing in the perivoli.

When to visit Greece

Greece is blessed with a Mediterranean climate. From mid May to mid June and mid September to October the climate is pleasant and sunshine is plentiful. July and August are hot with temperatures reaching 37°C. Winters tend to be mild in the south but much cooler in the north with an increased chance of rain.
