One of the first hotels to grace the Crans-Montana resort, over a century of hospitality has taught this family-owned chaletesque den how to keep a good table.

There’s always a sense of familiarity with independent boutiques, but at Pas de l’Ours the warm kindred embrace is palpable. Formally a rehabilitation centre for war veterans, they’re well versed in the art of making guests feel at home. Cosy rooms of chalet-mod character greet with timber and stone softened by blankets and dancing fireplaces, and hidden passages and stairs end in nooks worthy of a good book. It’s more of a local Swiss haunt, so even the other guests add to the ambience and an illusion that this place is a secret only known to select outsiders.

However, if the way to win hearts is through the stomach, then the infatuation with Pas de l’Ours is sealed at dinner. Owner and in-house Chef Franck is in charge of the inventive Michelin-starred restaurant and hearty bistro, sourcing his ingredients locally to compliment the 30-page strong wine menu from the expansive cellar. Franck also owns the mountain-top restaurant Cabane des Violettes that pairs its dishes with views as far reaching as Mont Blanc, so there’s no missing out on the Relais & Chateaux revered dining during a day of skiing (billable back to your room, of course).
