Cradled within the unspoilt landscape of Messenia, sustainability shapes every decision at Costa Navarino – from how the land is protected to how experiences are created. A true driving force in delivering world-class hospitality while safeguarding its natural and cultural heritage for generations to come.
In a world where the word ‘sustainability’ is everywhere, its meaning can easily be lost – what’s just a marketing buzzword or a genuine environmental commitment? But it’s clear to see even upon arrival that Costa Navarino doesn’t just talk sustainability – it lives it; an honest and raw example of a premier destination championing and preserving the natural beauty and rich heritage of its region, while empowering the local communities to prosper.
None of it is forced but gently woven into the experience so it feels authentic rather than performative, with their efforts documented in reports openly published online for anyone wishing to peruse.
From actions including obtaining all electricity from renewable sources and cutting operational emissions and single-use plastics, to preserving biodiversity, sourcing local ingredients, and a stray animal rehoming initiative, it’s all dedicated to enhancing the well-being of the communities in Messenia as well as the land they live in.
The numbers speak for themselves. Increased loggerhead turtle nests and thriving olive trees offer tangible proof that the work is paying off – a testament to the vision and dedication established from the start by its founder, the captain.
Captain Vassilis Constantakopoulos long believed that “taking fills your hands, but giving fills your heart”, and he dedicated himself to cultivating a place where homeowners and visitors could experience a truly fulfilling life. A passionate environmental activist since the 1970s and one of the initial members of the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association, it’s no surprise to learn that the captain dedicated two decades of his life at sea before excelling in cargo shipping.
The grand vision for Costa Navarino was born in the mid-1980s, eventually becoming reality with the opening of its first area in 2010. He knew that a vision of this scale needed room to grow and more importantly, the alignment and trust of the local community, and through years of careful and collaborative negotiation alongside patience and underlying passion he earned the support of those whose partnership mattered most. Ever conscious of preserving the land he cherished, he ensured extraordinary measures were taken to protect it; 16,000 olive trees were gently lifted during the project and tucked back in within two years. It’s a testament to the deep respect and stewardship that defined his approach from the beginning.
Boasting four signature 18-hole courses within a six-mile radius and facilities that could easily host the Olympics, Costa Navarino is a true gem and hot-on-the-lips of golf enthusiasts everywhere. For the fitness-focused traveller, sport is part of the DNA and it’s easy to see why the iconic IRONMAN triathlon has proudly been staged here. After all, elite performance begins with respect for the landscape it plays upon – and with a commitment to its long-term protection.
Nothing here falls short of the crème de la crème. The renowned Mouratoglou Tennis Centre attracts professionals from across the globe, supported by top tier academies like the NBA Basketball School and the FC Bayern Munich Football Camp where little legends are made. But fear not, for those who prefer a more relaxed pace (at least on holiday), the resort balances energy with calm, letting sport fade effortlessly into the background if you wish.
The ultimate all-rounder – family-focused, yet equally appealing to couples and friends alike. With a timeless design influenced by traditional Messinian architecture and complemented by the affectionate use of handmade local pottery and textiles, it’s a true ode to Greek craftmanship. The recent eco-friendly refurbishment didn’t just rely on locally sourced materials; many pieces and decorative elements were thoughtfully repurposed, creating a fresh new aesthetic without making a dent on its ecological footprint.
Rooms are beautifully earthy and neutral, blending natural materials of wood, raffia, marble and stone, all styled with a modern aesthetic and minimalist textiles. Meandering through the wooden-framed walkways is all part of the experience; charming, immersive, and evocative of destinations like Bali or Tulum, yet infused with the stillness of Japanese ryokan design and illuminated by an enchanting glow after dusk.
Surrounded by in-keeping, rustic-yet-modern olive trees with warm Grecian sunlight delicately peeping through, a quaint Mediterranean stone building houses the 1827 Bar & Lounge at the Westin Resort. It’s a delightful paradox; set amid breathtakingly beautiful open space, yet radiating an intimate and cosy ambiance.
Mediterranean-inspired mezze style dishes, designed to be enjoyed by hand, arrive like little surprises even though selections are already known. The vibrant beetroot bites filled with cream cheese, orange and pistachio are miniature works of art, as is the crispy tostado with shrimp.
Both pair perfectly with the beautiful pale, dry-yet-tasty, 1827 house rosé, harvested by hand and gently pressed at the resort’s own winery.
The organic wine series – along with the lounge bar itself – proudly carries the name 1827 to commemorate the historic Battle of Navarino, fought in the bay and a pivotal moment in the Greek War of Independence. Alongside environmental preservation, honouring local history and heritage lies firmly at the heart of the experience.
The first W Hotel on Greek soil is a true gem of Costa Navarino – an artsy, playful, yet effortlessly glamorous lifestyle resort with a relaxed atmosphere, subtly reinforced by its age 12 and over policy. So relaxed, in fact, that breakfast consists of drifting through a series of stations housing a coffee shop, deli, and bakery, each striking the perfect balance of luxury and an easy-going spirit. Even the soft, homely whir of the resort’s buggies complement its unhurried vibe.
Made up of local stone, wood, and reed inspired by Peloponnese traditions, the upscale interior is a celebration of local craftmanship – even the signature W totem was authentically fashioned from reclaimed timber, giving new life to old fishing boats.
Just a few minutes’ walk from the W – and for many, the cherry on top – lies the seaside promenade of Navarino Agora, complete with its own villas and suites. This trendy and lively hub is open to all, offering everything from restaurants and stylish boutiques to a charming chapel, an open-air cinema, and arts-focused events – all celebrating the buzz of Messinian culture.
Parelia is the beating heart of Costa Navarino, nestled upon the sands with a name aptly inspired by the Greek words “Parea” (friends) and “Paralia” (beach) and boasting uninterrupted views of the Ionian Sea. With spectacular seafood served with laid-back charm by day, and a vibrant beach club energised by international DJs by night, it quickly becomes clear: this is a place of belonging.
A quietly impressive air of distinction and grandeur flows through this resort. The breathtaking entrance, draped in flowing white fabrics, welcomes guests with effortless elegance, while a captivating scent lingers in the air, wrapping the senses in sophistication with a hint of romance. Ease onto the Anax terrace at dusk for a pre-dinner cocktail crafted from locally sourced ingredients, as the soaring pillars and apex design beautifully frame the Messinian sunset to perfection. It’s a moment reserved for those who know that luxury is as much about presence as it is about privilege.
As private as it gets, the resort’s three-bedroom sea-facing Royal Villa, located on the edge of The Dunes Beach, is a rare treasure encountered by few. Complete with its own gym, spa, sauna, exclusive butler and private beach gazebo, it has been known to have impressed the world’s most discerning, high-profile guests – but that’s all on the hush of course.
For nature-loving explorers itching to take time away from their sun loungers, the resort’s e-bikes are brimming with the promise of adventure. The route to the sands of Voidokilia Beach – voted one of the best in the world by The Times – includes a stop at one of the oldest recorded olive trees in the world where it continues to blossom and produce after 17 centuries. A fitting symbol for a region that so deeply cares for its nature and landscape.
The beach’s iconic, history-steeped white crescent takes its nickname ‘ox-belly’, from its distinctive curved shape. Yet local lore also tells of its poetic alternative name, ‘the bay of music’, inspired by an ancient Greek myth celebrating peace and brotherhood between Hermes and Apollo. Standing there, captivated by the bay’s charm, it’s easy to imagine the soft, distant melodies of the lyre Hermes gifted to Apollo as an apology for hiding his oxen – an instrument originally crafted from the shell of a sea turtle, which, remarkably, still nests on these shores today.
Embrace the relaxed Greek pace and linger like a local, as there’s much more to see here. Up in the hills lies the medieval fortress ruins of Palaiokastro (Old Navarino Castle), with extraordinary blanket views of the entire bay, Ionian Sea, and the adjacent Gialova Lagoon. Actively supported by the resort, the wetland protects hundreds of bird species and serves as a crucial stop for migratory birds, it is also one of the only places in Europe where the African chameleon can be found. A haven for flamingo lovers, spring is the best time to admire these graceful, ballerina-like birds in their natural habitat.
Perched on the Messenian cliffside in the quaint village of Gialova lies a traditional home where an authentic village cooking class awaits. Upon arrival, the balcony commands instant attention with its incredible view of the horizon’s spectacular postcard-worthy sunset, while the details of the charming, time-honoured décor reveals the home’s character.
Aprons are donned, and it’s time to prepare cherished inherited recipes – spinach pie, salads and fresh pasta – all under the watchful eye of the two gracious hosts, Anna & Loula, who seem able to craft the recipes in their sleep. After the final sprinkle of Greek charm, guests gather to enjoy the fruits of their labour, complemented by dishes prepared earlier and a generous pouring of local wine. The evening concludes with a spot of Greek dancing, keeping the spirit (and digestion) joyfully flowing.
Perched on a platform of natural wooden plinths, with incredible views of the crystal-clear Ionian Sea, lies the Instagram-able, bucket-list-worthy Barbouni beach restaurant. Superb seafood, the catch of the day, and local signature delicacies are served up amid true pinch-me-moments and effortless luxury, as rippling fabric ribbons and native rattan lampshades dance in the wind overhead, echoing the captivating waves of the sea.
True to Costa Navarino’s ethos, preserving the local environment and ecosystem comes first here. No offer (however lucrative), has ever persuaded the restaurant to welcome evening guests as the precious loggerhead sea turtles nest quietly and undisturbed on the beach.
