The benefits of private ski lessons

Words by New Generation Ski and Snowboarding School
5 min read

Thinking about booking ski lessons for your next ski holiday? While both group and private tuition have their advantages, the right choice will depend on your goals, experience level and how you like to learn. Our ski school partner, New Generation Ski and Snowboard School, explains the key benefits of private ski lessons and who they're best suited to.

Stories for... The Head

Ski lessons are a great way to make your ski dreams a reality, whether that's conquering untracked powder or simply enjoying an unforgettable day on the slopes with the family. The benefits extend far beyond that. For first-timers and those seeking a refresher to more experienced skiers looking to sharpen their technique, lessons with an expert instructor can help you tackle the mountain with confidence.

When deciding between group and private lessons, however, it can be difficult to know which option is right for you. While both have their advantages, private lessons offer a personalised approach that can help you progress faster and focus on your individual goals.

Here, our ski school partner, New Generation Ski and Snowboard School, explains the key benefits of private ski lessons and who can benefit from them most.

Tailored to your needs

Private ski lessons are a great way to get focused coaching on specific techniques or areas of improvement. Your instructor will ask what you would like to achieve and will work towards that goal.

Tips: Be clear about what you want to achieve from your time with your instructor and share as much detail as possible. The more your instructor knows, the more they can tailor the lesson.

For example, let's say that you want to improve your carving, and you will be in Val d'Isere for one week. This information will help us find the perfect ski instructor for your private ski lessons in Val d'Isere and a schedule that fits your goals and availability.

One-on-one coaching

With a private lesson, all the attention is on you, and you choose the areas where you want to make the most progress. Every session is built entirely around you, with targeted feedback that helps you improve where it matters for you personally, not just for your ski level. It is also great for a confidence boost, as many skiers feel more comfortable asking questions one-on-one.

On and off-piste

If you book private ski lessons, you can choose between on-piste and off-piste lessons. If you book off-piste lessons, your instructor will help you to safely navigate beyond the piste markers. They'll ensure that you've got the right safey gear, the snow conditions are correct and avalanche risks are mitigated.

Flexible lessons

Private ski lessons can be booked from two hours to all day. They are far more customisable too, you can choose the start times, duration and lesson objectives you want to focus on.

Ski alone or with friends and family

Taking private ski lessons is a great way to learn together. Private lessons work well for families or small groups of similar ability. If there is a large difference in ability, we then suggest group lessons

Which is better:
Private or group lessons?

Group ski lessons

- If you enjoy social learning, group lessons are a great option

- Many solo travellers also choose this option as they can meet people at the same level

- For families travelling with children under 10, group lessons are also beneficial, as they feel motivated to learn alongside kids of the same age and level

- They are usually a more affordable way to learn if you're travelling alone or with people at different skiing levels

Private ski lessons

- Progress at your own pace, take the time to understand the feedback, practice and learn it

- Focus on specific goals and be clear about what you want to achieve

- Ski with friends and family members who are at the same level as you. This is practical and can be a more affordable option

- More flexible as you can choose at what time to start, the length of your lessons and meeting points
