British Virgin Islands / Moskito Island

A pinnacle of privacy for the deep-pocketed looking to escape from it all; this paparazzi-free playground invites the elite to throw on the flip-flops, discover new skills, and let their authentic selves roam free.

A getaway synonymous with the solitude that’s rarely found outside such a tiny archipelago; this latest A-lister to the BVIs promises a private island experience where even the most sophisticated can unleash their inner child. Yet on this spot of land owned by an exclusive group, it's The Branson Estate that alludes to the feeling of an Oscar-winning podium. And with likely celebrities and politicians as neighbours, there’s also mutual respect that while scenery is shared, precious memories remain unseen.

Travel notes:

  • Arrive at Beef Island and transfer to Moskito Island via private speedboat charter or a faster helicopter option

A sense of place

A family of 50 BVI islands, of which only 16 play host to visitors; Moskito Island is like a tiny toddler being invited into a close circle known for having twice the fun. Too young to have inherited that manicured island look, it’s where wilder luscious greens line your path, with hilltop views worth gasping for. And, in turn, there remains the individual styles of each villa across the estate, reminding you that this is the Caribbean with a twist punchier than rum itself.

 In pursuit of...

…swapping hotels for whole estates. The beauty of singing into the ocean breeze at this property is that only your loved ones will hear you. Days are spent with everyone bundled together, either lounging by wraparound infinity pools or picking up new skills like adventurous kitesurfing (following in Barak Obama’s famous footsteps). By night, it’s then about finding that designated “spot”, where card and board games will surely start flowing, either huddled around a fireplace or soaking in the views sipping on a cocktail.

"The beauty of singing into the ocean breeze at this property is that only your loved ones will hear you."

Wake up here

Located on the north east tip, the estate is made up of three unique villas. The monarch of the property, Headland House sits pride of place on a small peninsula, claiming the prize for most impressive wraparound pool. The other two villas were inspired by Branson’s children; the Mangrove Villa’s cosy and calming ambiance comes courtesy of its Balinese interiors and views out towards Branson’s other property Necker Island, while the Beach Villa shelters away with its smaller guest houses (Turtle, Gecko and Palm) above a sandy beach. Walkways and lifts easily connect the areas for times when the whole family are in tow, but should each villa be rented out individually, the privacy still remains unparalleled.

On location

While the estate has its own team specifically looking after food and fun-filled itineraries, there’s also a communal island space (also bookable for your party alone if you want it) that invites you to stretch out your legs and embrace a different view. This is the area to come and get a bit competitive, with tennis tournaments, sandy-beach Olympic games, and boast about your sight-of-the-day snorkelling trips. Or, perhaps, it’s your chosen space to unwind and take in some different dining options; with toes-in-the-sand meals watching the sun go down over the shining waters.

A Carrier curation

If there’s such a thing as giving a body of water a "first class" award, the BVI’s would certainly be close to winning it. A hotspot for super yachts and sailing regattas, it wouldn’t be a trip here without embarking on your own island-hopping adventure. Whether it be via sailing lessons, jumping on a hobie cat, or just choosing your favourite boat from the wide fleet. What’s more, there’s lunch to be had at Norman Island or Jost Van Dyke and the infinite beauty to be explored across 49 other isles.

When to visit The British Virgin Islands

With a tropical climate and average temperature of 26°C, the winter months between January to April are the most popular months to visit, with increased rainfall to be expected between July and November.
